BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Andrew Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) rapped out four hits as Westfield State used a pair of comebacks in the late innings to sweep a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon by scores of 6-5 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap in games played at Commodore Hendy Field.

The visiting Owls (12-13, 5-3 MASCAC) overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 fourth inning lead in the opener, as freshman D.J. Bishop (Dartmouth, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and fellow freshman Tyler Adams (West Barnstable, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly, and Westfield State extended that margin to 4-2 in the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Pat McWilliams (Duxbury, Mass.).  The host Buccaneers (7-13, 3-5 MASCAC) evened matters in the bottom of the frame when freshman Michael Lenane (Dorchester, Mass.) singled and scored on a triple by senior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.), who then came across with the tying run on a sacrifice fly by junior Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.), and Massachusetts Maritime took a 5-4 advantage with two outs in the sixth on a run-scoring infield single by sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.).  Medeiros led off the seventh with a double and scored the tying run on an RBI triple by senior Kevin Greene (Worcester, Mass.), who came across with what proved to be the winning tally on a suicide squeeze by junior Kyle Colesanti (Mount Kisco, N.Y.).  The hosts had a chance to force extra innings in the bottom half of the frame, but Lenane was stranded at third to end the contest.

Medeiros and McWilliams each had two of Westfield State’s nine hits in the opening triumph, as senior Curt Everett (Lexington, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound for the Owls with two scoreless innings in relief of junior Mike Sullivan (East Sandwich, Mass.), who allowed four earned runs and fanned two over the first five frames.  Senior Zachary Sullivan (Barnstable, Mass.) rapped out two hits for Massachusetts Maritime, which grabbed its 2-0 second inning lead on an error and an RBI single by senior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.).  Freshman Joshua Bergeron (Providence, R.I.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, as sophomore Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) allowed two earned runs over the first four innings.

Massachusetts Maritime took a 1-0 second inning lead in the nightcap on an RBI groundout by junior Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.), and both teams plated tallies in the third on errors.  Westfield State took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth on sacrifice flies by Adams and Greene, and Medeiros provided the Owls with a key insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single, as the Buccaneers crept back to within one on Maher’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning and had the tying and winning runs on base but were unable to score again.

Medeiros and freshman Shane Lynch (Hope, R.I.) each had two hits in the nightcap triumph for Westfield State, as junior Kevin Zyrkowski (Hingham, Mass.) went the distance in allowing two earned runs and overcoming 10 hits to strike out six and improve to 4-0 on the season for the Owls.  Freshman Gregory Downs (Marshfield, Mass.) had three hits in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received two hits from Lenane and Genereux.  Junior Keith Sanchez (Monroe Township, N.J.) suffered the tough-luck setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, allowing three unearned runs and fanning five over the first five innings.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Coast Guard in a non-league outing on Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Westfield State hosts Albertus Magnus in a non-league contest on Tuesday afternoon in Westfield, Mass. that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
