BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Aram Mulhern’s (Taunton, Mass.) suicide squeeze in the top of the sixth inning provided the margin of victory as Massachusetts Maritime gained a split of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with Framingham State by notching a 3-2 nightcap triumph Friday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.  Junior Tony Iafolla’s (Medfield, Mass.) RBI infield single and an ensuing error with two outs in the seventh inning of the opener enabled the Rams to notch a come-from-behind 5-4 victory.

Mulhern’s double, coupled with an RBI single off the bat of junior Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.), staked the host Buccaneers (4-7, 1-1 MASCAC) to a 2-0 first inning nightcap advantage, but sophomore Mark Mainini (Hull, Mass.) sliced the visiting Rams’ (5-10, 1-1) deficit in half with a third inning solo homer.  Framingham State evened matters in the fifth on senior Will Crofton’s (Hopkinton, Mass.) two-out run-scoring single, setting the stage for Massachusetts Maritime’s deciding rally in the sixth.  Senior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a groundout, and after a hit batsman placed runners at the corners, Mulhern laid down the suicide squeeze to provide the eventual game-winner for the hosts, as Mainini reached on an error with two outs in the seventh to give the visitors the potential tying run but was thrown out trying to steal second to end the contest.

Twelve individual players accounted for all of the combined hits between the two squads in the nightcap, as sophomore T.J. Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) earned the win on the mound by scattering five hits and fanning four over the first five innings for the Buccaneers.  Freshman Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) came on to record the finals six outs, including striking out the side in the sixth, to earn his first collegiate save for Massachusetts Maritime, which held a 7-5 edge in the hits column.  Sophomore Ryan Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) went the distance in suffering the setback on the mound for Framingham State, as he struck out three in falling to 1-3 on the season.

The Rams, who were the home team on the scoreboard in the twinbill, jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the opener on an RBI single by senior Justin Forman (Watertown, Mass.), but the Buccaneers evened matters in the fourth on Mulhern’s run-scoring double.  Framingham State plated a pair in the fifth on Crofton’s infield single and a sacrifice fly by junior Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) to take a 3-1 advantage, but Massachusetts Maritime evened things at 3-3 in the sixth on infield singles by Mulhern and freshman Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) before taking a 4-3 edge in the seventh on a two-out error that plated sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.).  The visitors took advantage of a leadoff error, a Colon single and a walk to Forman to load the bases with one out, but after a force at home, Iafolla’s grounder down the third base line provided the tying run, and Colon scored the winning tally on an ensuing error.

Forman collected three of Framingham State’s nine hits in the opener and finished with four in the twinbill, as Mainini, Crofton and Colon each finished with two hits in the doubleheader for the visitors.  Junior Matt DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) improved to 3-0 in going the distance on the mound for the Rams, as he allowed three earned runs and struck out six.  Genereux rapped out three hits as part of a 10-hit attack in the opening game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as he finished with four hits on the day overall, while Mulhern added two hits and finished with a combined four RBI for the hosts.  Rosano added two hits in the lid-lifter for the Buccaneers and finished with three safeties on the day, while sophomore Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) suffered the tough-luck setback on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime, as he allowed three earned runs and struck out five in going the distance.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Emerson in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Framingham State heads to Chicopee, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Elms in a non-league contest that begins at 1:00 p.m.
