BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Kevin Salines’s (Melrose, Mass.) one-out double in the top of the eighth sparked a three-run rally that lifted Salem State to a 5-3 nightcap victory and a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as junior Ryan Hyjek (Tolland, Conn.) fired a complete-game two-hit shutout and struck out 10 to give the Vikings a 3-0 opening game triumph.

Salines evened matters in the top of the sixth of the nightcap for the visiting Vikings (10-9, 4-0 MASCAC), as his RBI single plated fellow senior Steve Buitkus (Reading, Mass.), who lofted a one-out triple to right, to tie the score at 2-2.  The host Buccaneers (5-9, 1-3 MASCAC) had a chance to win the contest in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runners on, but senior Andrew Guido (Kingston, Mass.) came out of the Salem State bullpen to end that threat and send the game to extra innings.  Sophomore Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass.) opened the Salem State eighth with a single and advanced to second on a Buitkus sacrifice before Salines’s two-bagger gave the visitors the lead for good, as the Vikings tacked on two more runs on an error and an RBI single off the bat of freshman Richard Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime threatened again in the bottom of the frame against Guido, loading the bases on a walk and infield singles by junior Brendan O’Kane (Pocasset, Mass.) and freshman Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.).  Senior Zach Sullivan’s (Barnstable, Mass.) run-scoring groundout sliced the Buccaneer deficit to two, but Guido induced a pair of fly balls to end the game.

Salines collected three of Salem State’s seven hits to go with three RBI in the nightcap triumph, as he gave the Vikings a 1-0 third inning lead with a run-scoring single.  Junior Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) was one of six players to record hits in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as his two-run double in the bottom of the third staked the Buccaneers to a 2-1 lead they carried into the late innings, setting up the deciding tally by the visitors.  Guido earned his first win of the season out of the bullpen for Salem State, as sophomore Cato Lacroix (Holliston, Mass.) allowed four hits and fanned two over the first five frames on the mound.  Freshman Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) suffered the setback on the hill in the nightcap for the hosts in allowing one earned run, as sophomore T.J. Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.) also scattered four hits and struck out four over the first six innings.

Salem State plated the only runs it would need with three unearned tallies in the fourth inning of the opener, as Salines scored on a passed ball and Fecteau followed with a sacrifice fly before freshman Genaro Ciulla (Peabody, Mass.) added a two-out RBI single.  Salines picked up two more hits in the lid-lifter as part of a five-hit Viking attack in support of Hyjek, who retired the first 10 batters he faced despite going to 3-2 counts on seven of the game’s opening nine hitters.  Hyjek carried a no-hitter into the fifth before junior Bob Lee (Braintree, Mass.) broke up the bid with a single up the middle that was followed by Sullivan’s single to center, but that would prove to be the lone safeties of the game for Massachusetts Maritime, as Hyjek went the distance to improve to 3-0 on the season for the visitors.  Sophomore Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) suffered the tough-luck setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, allowing four hits and fanning a pair over the first six innings to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Salve Regina in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State hosts Roger Williams in a non-league contest on Tuesday in Salem, Mass. that begins at 3:30 p.m.
