BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) combined to go a perfect 9-for-9 at the plate with five RBI as Massachusetts Maritime held off a furious late inning rally to post a 9-7 non-league college baseball victory over Becker Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

Maher’s RBI double in the top of the first plated Rosano to give the host Buccaneers (3-4), who were the visiting team on the scoreboard, an early 1-0 cushion, and Massachusetts Maritime extended that margin to 3-0 in the third on an RBI single by Rosano, who later scored on a wild pitch.  Maher’s second run-scoring two-bagger in the fourth accounted for the hosts’ fourth tally, and the Buccaneers added three more in the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Michael Lenane (Dorchester, Mass.) that was followed by Rosano’s two-run triple.

The hosts added what proved to be two crucial runs in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring groundout by Lenane and a wild pitch, as the visiting Hawks (0-11) nearly erased their 9-0 deficit with a seven run outburst in the bottom of the frame. Senior Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) began Becker’s rally with a sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by seniors Austin Phillips (Thomson, Ga.) and Tony D’Addio (West Haven, Conn.) were sandwiched by a run-scoring double by junior Taylor Kapulka (Worcester, Mass.) and a two-run two-bagger off the bat of senior Tom Natoli (Suffern, N.Y.) that closed the gap to two.  The Hawks got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Buccaneer sophomore Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) induced a groundout by Kapulka to end the game.

Rosano was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored in the triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, while Maher was 4-for-4 and reached base in all five of his plate appearances.  Senior Aram Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) added two hits as part of a 15-hit attack for the hosts, as freshman Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) earned his first career victory with three scoreless relief innings that included three strikeouts while Cooney recorded the final four outs (two via strikeout) to earn his second save of the spring for the Buccaneers.  Phillips, Natoli and freshman Nick Lemay (Oxford, Mass.) each collected two of Becker’s 11 hits in the setback, as junior Trenton Gibson (Henderson, Nev.) suffered the setback in allowing four runs over the first five innings of work for the Hawks.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Medford, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Tufts in a non-league outing that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Becker hosts Rhode Island College in a non-league contest on Wednesday afternoon in Leicester, Mass. beginning at 4:00 p.m.
