WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Senior Madeline Tomich (Alford, Mass.) rapped out six hits and drove in three runs at the plate while tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout inside the circle to lead Westfield State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon by scores of 15-0 in the opener and 15-2 in the nightcap in five inning games played at Alumni Field.

The host Owls (15-16, 6-4 MASCAC) received three hits and five RBI from junior Brittany Dussault (Chicopee, Mass.) in the opening game triumph, while junior Courtney Begin (Salem, Mass.) and freshman Vicki Hill (West Springfield, Mass.) added three hits each.  Tomich helped her own cause with three hits and two RBI at the plate while striking out 12 on the mound to improve to 9-6 on the season.  Senior Lisa Policelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) collected two of Westfield State’s 19 hits in the lid-lifter, while juniors Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) rapped out singles in the opening game setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-19, 0-10 MASCAC).  Beaulieu struck out three in going the distance inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime, as seven of the runs she allowed were unearned.

The Buccaneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat of the nightcap when Beaulieu led off the game with a single and scored on a one-out RBI single by senior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.).  Thibeault, who doubled Beaulieu to third, plated the visitors’ second run when she scored on a double-steal attempt with McLaughlin.  Westfield State used a two-run single by sophomore Bri Eichstaedt (Southampton, Mass.) to take the lead for good as a part of a six-run first inning outburst, as she drove in four runs in the second contest for the Owls, who also received four hits and a pair of RBI from senior Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, Mass.) as well as three hits, including a solo homer, from Tomich.  Sophomore Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) allowed three hits and struck out seven over the first four innings to improve to 4-7 for the hosts, while sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) went the distance and fanned one inside the circle in the nightcap for Massachusetts Maritime.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Westfield State hosts MCLA in a MASCAC twinbill on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field that also begins at 2:00 p.m.
