BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Autumn Thompson’s (Troy, Vt.) RBI single in the top of the seventh inning plated the winning run and lifted Lyndon State to a 2-1 nightcap victory and a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader of Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field, as the visiting Hornets used a seven-run second inning outburst to notch a 9-1 opening game triumph.

Freshman Jillian Emery’s (Morrisville, Vt.) RBI groundout in the top of the fourth gave Lyndon State (6-6) in a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, but the host Buccaneers (0-2) evened matters in the bottom of the fifth of their season opener on senior Holly McLaughlin’s (Belmont, Mass.) run-scoring double.  The score remained tie until the seventh when junior Alise Vandal (Andover, Mass.) led off the Hornets’ seventh with a single, and after freshman pinch runner Dannika Dobrowski (Plainfield, Vt.) was sacrificed to second, Thompson followed with the deciding single to center.  Massachusetts Maritime had the tying and winning runs at second and third with one out in the bottom of the frame, but the hosts were unable to plate either tallies.

Thompson collected two of Lyndon State’s four hits in the nightcap in support of freshman Katie Davis (North Haverhill, N.H.), who allowed just two hits and struck out nine in going the distance.  Junior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) also went the route in allowing an earned run and fanning three in the setback for Buccaneers, as she accounted for the hosts’ other safety with a single.

Freshman Jena Finnegan (Keeseville, N.Y.) rapped out two hits and drove in a pair of runs in the opening game triumph for the Hornets, who also received a two-run double from sophomore Meghan Gadapee (Littleton, N.H.), an RBI single by freshman Julia McNeil (Lowell, Mass.) and a fielder’s choice RBI groundout off the bat of freshman Katie Ste. Marie (North Troy, Vt.).  Gadapee allowed an unearned run and struck out seven to collect the win for the visitors, as Beaulieu collected two hits in the opener for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received safeties from juniors Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) and Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.).  Sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) suffered the setback inside the circle for the Buccaneers in her collegiate debut, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Boston on Tuesday afternoon to take on Wentworth in a non-league doubleheader that begins at 4:00 p.m., while Lyndon State will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Hornets travel to New London, Conn. to take on Mitchell in a non-league twinbill that begins at 1:00 p.m.
