BOSTON, Mass. --  Freshman Sam Burgner (Dalton, Mass.) tossed a no-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Wentworth to an 8-0 nightcap victory over Massachusetts Maritime in a non-league college softball doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon at Carr Diamond, as the host Leopards posted a 12-2 triumph in the opener.

Burgner took a perfect game into the top of the fifth for Wentworth (5-6), as she settled for the no-hitter after committing a throwing error with one out.  The Leopards got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first on sophomore Haylee Bacik’s (Lowell, Mass.) two-run double, and Wentworth added six tallies in the second, highlighted by RBI singles off the bats of Burgner and freshman Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) as well as a sacrifice fly by senior Randi Swihart (Gardner, Mass.).  Freshman Isabella Grassetti (Monson, Mass.) collected two of the hosts’ seven hits in the second contest, as Burgner improved to 3-5 with the victory.  Junior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) fanned a pair in going the distance inside the circle for the visiting Buccaneers (0-4) in the nightcap.

Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead in the opener on an RBI single by junior Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.), but Wentworth rallied for five tallies in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Bacik’s bases-clearing triple and a bases-loaded walk to freshman Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.).  The Leopards extended their edge to 9-1 in the third on RBI singles by sophomore Kelly Budzik (Fort Plain, N.Y.) and Swihart, who added a two-run single in a three-run fourth to close out the hosts’ scoring.  Swihart rapped out three of Wentworth’s seven opening game hits in support of Budzik, who allowed an earned run and fanned five to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Thibeault recorded a pair of hits in the opening game setback for the Buccaneers, who received their other run from sophomore Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) on a throwing error in the fifth.  Sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) fanned four in going the distance for the visitors.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Maine Maritime in the Admiral’s Cup doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at Noon, while Wentworth heads to Wenham, Mass. on Friday afternoon for a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill with Gordon that begins at 3:00 p.m.
