MILTON, Mass. --  Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) registered a career-high double-double effort of 13 kills and 11 digs as Massachusetts Maritime presented first-year Head Coach Melanie Appleman with her first career victory in a 3-0 non-league triumph over Pine Manor at Curry’s Student Center Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

 

Freshman Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) added five kills for the Buccaneers (1-3), who won by game scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-14 in the middle contest of a tri-match.  Junior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.) chipped in with four kills and a career-high 23 set assists for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received four kills and three service aces from senior Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) as well as nine digs and seven service aces from freshman Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.).  Junior Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) collected 12 digs and five service aces for the Buccaneers, who also received a combined three kills and 15 digs from juniors Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.) and Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) in presenting Hyannis native Appleman, a former standout at both Barnstable High and Bridgewater State, with her inaugural collegiate victory.

 

Sophomore Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Ak.) notched eight digs, five set assists, four service aces and four kills in the setback for the Gators (0-7), who also received three kills and six digs from sophomore Mary Owen (Houston, Tex.) as well as eight digs from senior Shaniesha Williams (Boston, Mass.).

 

Host Curry posted identical 3-0 victories in the tri-match, as the Colonels (2-4) topped Massachusetts Maritime in the nightcap by game scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-9.  Junior Nicole Grambley (North Attleboro, Mass.) registered seven kills and eight service aces in the win for Curry, which also received six kills and nine set assists from junior Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) to go with 14 digs and three kills from freshman Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.).  Klangos recorded five kills, four service aces and four digs in the nightcap setback for the Buccaneers, who also received three kills from Calnan, nine set assists and six digs from Ethier as well as a combined 16 digs from O’Connor and Hoffman.

 

Massachusetts Maritime and Pine Manor meet again in a non-league match on Tuesday evening in Chestnut Hill, Mass. that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Curry travels to Bristol, R.I. on Friday evening to open Commonwealth Coast Conference play against Roger Williams beginning at 7:00 p.m.
