KINGS POINT, N.Y. --  The Massachusetts Maritime volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-0 non-league decisions to SUNY-Maritime and host Merchant Marine in opening round action of the Sixth Annual Maritime Classic played Saturday afternoon at Liebertz Gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y.) registered eight kills in SUNY-Maritime’s (3-5) opening 25-13, 25-19, 25-10 triumph, as junior Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y.) and freshman Meredith Hayes (Houston, Tex.) each added seven kills for the Privateers, who also received 23 set assists from junior Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y.).  Senior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) collected four kills and five digs in the opening setback for the Buccaneers (1-6), who also received a pair of kills each from juniors Meaghan Brain (Hanson, Mass.) and Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) as well as eight set assists from junior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.).

 

Freshman Hannah Hill (Parkersburg, W. Va.) notched nine kills in Merchant Marine’s (6-3) 25-7, 25-9, 25-4 win over Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Brianne Cook (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) added 25 set assists and seven kills for the Mariners, who also received five kills each from sophomore Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.).  Harris posted a pair of kills and five digs in the second setback for the Buccaneers, who also received three sets assists from Ethier as well as five digs from junior Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime meets Maine Maritime in second round play of the Sixth Annual Maritime Classic on Sunday morning at Liebertz Gymnasium beginning at 10:00 a.m.
