KINGS POINT, N.Y. --  Junior Gillian O’Neal (Burbank, Calif.) notched 14 kills and seven digs to lead Maine Maritime to a 3-0 non-league college volleyball victory over Massachusetts Maritime in second round action of the Sixth Annual Maritime Classic played at Merchant Marine’s Leibertz Gymnasium Sunday morning.

 

Freshman Tess Clark (Spring, Tex.) added a double-double effort of 12 kills, 12 digs and six service aces for the victorious Mariners (8-3), who won by game scores of 25-10, 25-10 and 25-17 to claim their seventh straight triumph.  Freshman Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Ak.) collected 27 set assists for Maine Maritime, which also received nine digs from senior Jessica Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.).

 

Seniors Emily Calnan (Hingham, Mass.) and Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.) registered three kills each and combined for nine digs in the setback for the Buccaneers (1-7), who also received seven set assists and six digs from junior Emma Ethier (Norton, Mass.).  Junior Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.), who earned a spot on the Maritime Classic all-tournament team, chipped in with a pair of kills and six digs for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 12 digs from junior Stephanie O’Connor (Westwood, Mass.).

 

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Leicester, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Becker in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Maine Maritime hosts Bates on Wednesday evening in a non-league match in Castine, Maine that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
