SALEM, Mass. --  Freshman Alysha Brunelle (Auburn, Mass.) netted a hat trick to lead Salem State to an 8-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Markers by Brunelle and sophomore Amy Griffith (Middleton, Mass.) just 1:12 apart midway through the opening 45 minutes of play gave the host Vikings (7-5-2, 2-2-2 MASCAC) the only tallies they would need, as Salem State extended its lead to 5-0 at the break on goals by junior Veronica Poirier (Newburyport, Mass.) and sophomore CeCelia Cresta-Devine (Saugus, Mass.) as well as Brunelle’s second of the day.  Freshman Sharon Tung (Lynn, Mass.) gave the hosts a 6-0 edge in the 66th minute, and after sophomore Sara Previte (Beverly, Mass.) collected Salem State’s seventh goal of the contest in the 80th minute, Brunelle completed her hat trick with 1:19 remaining to cap the Viking scoring.  Freshman Emily Behen (Danvers, Mass.) accounted for the lone tally of the day in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (2-11, 0-6 MASCAC), as her unassisted marker (her sixth of the season) with 11 seconds remaining accounted for the final score.

Previte, Poirier and Cresta-Devine each finished with a goal and assist in the triumph for Salem State, which also received a pair of assists from sophomore Rachel Garabedian (Lowell, Mass.) in support of freshman keeper Rachel Ledbetter (Dracut, Mass.), who picked up the win without making a save.  Freshman Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) made 11 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Vikings took 34 of the 35 shots in the match.

Massachusetts Maritime closes out its 2012 schedule next Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers head to Framingham, Mass. to take on Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that begins at Noon, while Salem State hosts Babson in a non-league match on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field beginning at 6:00 p.m.
