NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Juniors Diane Barry (Norwood, Mass.) and Tracie Calvert (Sandwich, Mass.) each rapped out three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead UMass Dartmouth to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by game scores of 5-0 in the opener and 9-5 in the nightcap shortened to five innings due to darkness Wednesday afternoon at the UMD Athletic Complex.

Calvert’s two run single in the bottom of the first of the opener capped a four-run rally for the host Corsairs (3-7), who received an RBI single off the bat of Barry in the second to close out the scoring in the lid-lifter.  Junior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, Mass.) scattered four hits and struck out 10 to earn the victory inside the circle for UMass Dartmouth, while sophomore Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) had one of the four hits in the opening game setback for the visiting Buccaneers (0-8), as she allowed a pair of earned runs and fanned a career-high seven for Massachusetts Maritime.

The Buccaneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat of the nightcap on an RBI groundout by junior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.), but the Corsairs answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double by freshman Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, Mass.) and a passed ball.  Massachusetts Maritime evened matters with a pair of runs in the top of the second on an error and a run-scoring double off the bat of sophomore Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.), but UMass Dartmouth regained a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch.  The Buccaneers gained their first lead of the day at 5-4 on sophomore Sarah Click’s (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) two-run homer (her first of the season), but the Corsairs took the lead for good in their half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by junior Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and a run-scoring groundout by sophomore Taylor Ham (Hingham, Mass.).  The hosts iced their triumph with three fourth inning tallies, on an error and a Barry RBI single before the game was halted due to darkness in the fifth.

Barry, Pontes, Calvert and senior Michelle Conway (Burrillville, R.I.) each had two hits in the nightcap triumph for UMass Dartmouth, as Eldridge picked up her second win of the day in relief of freshman Julie Greenwood (Westport, Mass.) for the Corsairs.  Beaulieu added a single to join Click with a pair of hits in the twinbill for Massachusetts Maritime, as she suffered the setback inside the circle in relief of freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime opens MASCAC play on Saturday afternoon by hosting MCLA in a league twinbill at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth hosts Roger Williams in a non-league doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the UMD Athletic Complex beginning at 3:30 p.m.
