FITCHBURG, Mass. --  Senior Nicole Monroe (Pepperell, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in eight runs to lead Fitchburg State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon by scores of 15-0 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap in games played at Coolidge Park.

The host Falcons (13-16, 5-3 MASCAC) plated six runs in their first at-bat to take control of the opener, as Monroe collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs to help her own cause inside the circle, where she allowed six hits and struck out five to improve to 6-7 on the season.  Sophomore Kelly Bourgea (Malden, Mass.) rapped out three of Fitchburg State’s 13 hits in the first contest, while seniors Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass.) and Meghan Jenkins (Dedham, Mass.) each added two-run doubles for the hosts, who also received two hits and two RBI off the bat of freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Blackstone, Mass.) as well as two safeties and an RBI from sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass.).

Senior Katie Maynard (Chelmsford, Mass.), junior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.), sophomores Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.), Sarah Click (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and Erin Eastman (Harwich, Mass.) as well as freshman Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) each rapped out singles in the opening game setback for the visiting Buccaneers (1-15, 0-6 MASCAC), as freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) struck out three in going the route on the mound.

Monroe’s RBI single in the first inning of the nightcap provided an early lead for the Falcons, who tacked on three more tallies in the third on Monroe’s RBI groundout and a run-scoring triple by Moses, who later scored on a wild pitch.  Monroe’s two-run homer in the fifth, her first of the season, extended Fitchburg State’s lead to 6-0, but Massachusetts Maritime answered back with a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by Click and a fielding error.  The hosts added two more runs in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch and Monroe’s fifth RBI of the contest, a run-scoring groundout, to close out the nightcap scoring.

Monroe and sophomore Alycia McGrail (North Brookfield, Mass.) each had two hits in the second game triumph for Fitchburg State in support of junior Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass.), who scattered five hits and allowed an earned runs while fanning seven to improve to 4-4 on the season.  McLaughlin collected two of the Buccaneer safeties in the nightcap setback, as Labrecque allowed four earned runs to suffer the defeat inside the circle.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to Framingham, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Framingham State that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Fitchburg State hosts New England College in a non-league twinbill on Tuesday afternoon at Coolidge Park beginning at 3:00 p.m.
