BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Katelyn Willey (Lancaster, N.H.) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in five runs to lead Lyndon State to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader of Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 9-1 in the opener and 8-3 in the nightcap in the season opening contests for both teams played Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Hornets (2-0) jumped out to a 3-1 third inning advantage in the opener and took control of the contest with six runs in the middle frames, which were highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles off the bats of Willey and senior Mary Gagne (Highgate, Vt.), who finished with a pair of hits and three RBI in the first game.  Willey and freshmen Kelly Butler (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Tia Billado (Bellows Falls, Vt.) also drove in two runs in the opener for Lyndon State in support of freshman Meghan Gadapee (Littleton, N.H.), who earned her first collegiate victory by allowing an unearned run and striking out six.

Sophomore Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) collected two of the host Buccaneers’ (0-2) five hits in the first contest, as freshman Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) scored the lone Massachusetts Maritime run on an error in the third inning.  Freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) struck out three over four innings of work in her collegiate debut inside the circle for the hosts, which saw the debut of Head Coach Lindsay DeStefano spoiled.

The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 third inning lead in the nightcap on a two-run single by Willey that followed an RBI safety by Billado, and Lyndon State extended that margin to 4-0 in the fourth on Gagne’s RBI double before the Buccaneers closed back to within a run at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, as an RBI double by sophomore Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.), coupled with a run-scoring single by Beaulieu and an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.), accounted for the tallies.  The visitors plated an insurance run in the sixth on a wild pitch and iced their nightcap triumph with three runs in the top of the seventh, including a sacrifice fly by Willey, to close out the scoring.

Gagne and Billado each rapped out a pair of hits and combined for three RBI as part of a 15-hit nightcap attack for Lyndon State, which received three RBI from Willey as well as three hits each from freshman Morgan Sanderson (Fairfax, Vt.) and Gadapee, who went the distance and struck out three to pick up the twinbill sweep for the Hornets.  Johnson collected three of Massachusetts Maritime’s 11 hits in the second game setback, as the Buccaneers also received two hits each from sophomore Sarah Click (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and Beaulieu, who struck out three in going the distance inside the circle for the hosts.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Thomas in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Lyndon State will be idle until next Saturday when the Hornets travel to New London, Conn. to take on Mitchell in a non-league twinbill that begins at 2:00 p.m.
