BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Michelle Grifoni (Peabody, Mass.) rapped out five hits and drove in four runs, while freshman Jeanette Doucette (Andover, Mass.) collected four RBI to lift Salem State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 17-1 in the opener and 9-4 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Vikings (17-13, 3-3 MASCAC) jumped out to an 11-1 advantage in the three innings of the opener, as Grifoni collected four hits and combined with Doucette to drive in seven runs.  Junior Ashley Aldred (Arlington, Mass.) added three hits in the lid-lifter for the Vikings, who also received a pair of safeties off the bat of junior Gabbie Vitale (Danvers, Mass.).  Freshman Lauren DiCredico (Tewksbury, Mass.) allowed three hits and struck out six to improve to 7-2 inside the circle for Salem State, which rapped out 12 hits in the opening triumph.  Sophomore Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) collected two hits in the opening setback for the host Buccaneers (1-13, 0-4 MASCAC), who also received an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Erin Eastman (Harwich, Mass.).  Freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) went the distance and struck out one on the mound for Massachusetts Maritime in the first contest.

The Buccaneers jumped out to a 4-0 second inning lead of the nightcap, plating an unearned run in the first while adding three tallies in the second on an RBI single by sophomore Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) that was followed by bases loaded walks to both Thibeault and Eastman.  Salem State got a run back in the third on Doucette’s RBI fielder’s choice and evened matters in the fifth on a passed ball and error that sandwiched a run-scoring single by DiCredico.  Senior Taylor Orlando’s (Danvers, Mass.) two-run homer, her eighth round-tripper of the season, gave the Vikings the lead for good in the top of the sixth, and the visitors added three insurance tallies in the seventh on a triple by senior Jenna Lentine (Methuen, Mass.) as well as a passed ball and fielder’s choice that closed out the scoring.

Lentine joined Orlando with a pair of RBI in the nightcap victory for Salem State, which received two hits each off the bats of DiCredico, Orlando and sophomore Sarra Bergeron (Methuen, Mass.).  Freshman Nicole Wilson (Peabody, Mass.) picked up her fourth win in six decisions on the season in relief for the Vikings, as she fanned four in 4 1/3 innings of work.  Junior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) joined Johnson with a single in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as sophomore Janelle Beaulieu took the loss in going the final four innings in relief.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Fitchburg, Mass. on Monday afternoon to take on Fitchburg State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at Noon, while Salem State hosts Westfield State in a MASCAC doubleheader as well on Monday afternoon in Salem, Mass. that begins at 1:00 p.m.
