BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Sarah Estes (Brewer, Maine) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in five runs to lift Thomas to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Sunday afternoon by scores of 11-0 in the opener and 12-3 in the nightcap in games played at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Terriers (6-6) broke things open in the top of the third inning of the opener with a seven-run outburst that was keyed by a pair of two-run singles off the bats of junior Samantha Robison (South Berwick, Maine) and sophomore Samantha Moore (Etna, Maine), and Thomas added four unearned tallies in the sixth to close out the scoring.  Junior Sara Pavento (Glenburn, Maine) allowed just a pair of base runners and struck out nine to post the triumph inside the circle for the visitors.  Junior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) recorded the lone hit in the opening game for the host Buccaneers (0-3), as freshman Jaclyn Labrecque (Sutton, Mass.) worked the first three innings in suffering the setback on the mound.

After the Terriers grabbed a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat of the nightcap, Massachusetts Maritime gained a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the frame, as freshman Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) scored on an error before sophomores Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) and Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) followed with an RBI single and groundout, respectively.  Thomas regained the lead on Estes’ two-run double in the top of the second, and the visitors closed out the scoring with an eight-run third inning outburst that featured a two-run triple off the bat of freshman Lindsay Fry (Nantucket, Mass.) as well as Estes’ two-run single.

Senior Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, Maine) rapped out three of the Terriers’ 11 hits in the nightcap triumph, as Pavento allowed an unearned run and fanned seven to record her second win of the day for Thomas.  Sophomore Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) joined Sherman, McLaughlin and Thibeault in recording hits in the second contest for Massachusetts Maritime, as Beaulieu fanned one in three innings of work in suffering the setback for the Buccaneers inside the circle.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Boston in a non-league doubleheader next Saturday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Thomas hosts Maine-Presque Isle in a non-league twinbill next Saturday afternoon in Waterville, Maine that begins at 2:00 p.m.
