Buc Ball Sweeps Doubleheader against Falcons

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers served as the road team in their conference doubleheader against Fitchburg on Sunday as the games were originally supposed to be played in Fitchburg. In game, the teams played a 15-inning marathon that ended in the 15th after an RBI double from Michael Estrada put the team ahead. After they scored two more, the Bucs took game one, 10-7. In game two, Hunter Dean struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in a 12-0 shutout of the Falcons to sweep the MASCAC series.

Inside the Numbers

Maritime

  • Brett Velzis led the way in the game with four hits. Michael Estrada added three hits. Evan VieiraJake Houston, and Aidan Weir all had two hits. Tucker LeslieMax Hefner, and Damon White all had one hit in the win.
  • Velzis and Estrada each had two runs batted in in the game. Leslie, Hefner, White, and Houston all drove in one.
  • Estrada, Michael Logiudice, and Houston all scored three times. Leslie, White, and Weir each scored once.
  • Of the 16 Maritime hits, Estrada had the only extra base hit in the game, a double in the top of the 15th.

Fitchburg

  • Joe Abt, and Cole DuHaime each had three hits in the game. Matt Kelly and Matt Smith both had two hits. Jacob Hurrell, Adam Koza, Luke Sterner, and Nolan Hills all had one base knock.
  • Hills drove in two runs for the Falcons and four other hitters were credited with an RBI.
  • DuHaime scored three times and four other Falcons came in to score once.
  • Hurrell had a triple, DuHaime had two doubles, Hills and Abt each had a double for the Falcons extra base hits. 
  • DuHaime stole two bases in the loss.

How It Happened

The first two innings of game one went scoreless with the starting pitchers cruising. Then, in the top of the third, the Bucs scored the first run on a wild pitch that brought in Logiudice from third. In the bottom of the frame, the Falcons scored twice to take a 2-1 lead.

Fitchbrug extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. One came in on a ground out, another on a DuHaime double, and the third on a wild pitch. The Falcons led the Bucs, 5-1, after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, Maritime tied the game at 5-5. Leslie singled to bring in Logiudice, Houston came in to score one a wild pitch, Weird scored on an error and Estrada singled through the right side to score Leslie and we were tied at 5-5.

The Bucs blanked the Falcons in the bottom of the fifth and then took their second lead of the game in the top of the sixth. Velzis singled up the middle and brought in Houston to give the Bucs a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons took the lead right back on a pinch hit double from Hills to left field that scored Goldsten and DuHaime. The visiting hosts led 7-6 going to the seventh.

In the top of the seventh, Hefner singled up the middle in a pinch hit effort to score Estrada and tie the game at 7-7. Fitchburg failed to score in the bottom of the inning and the game went to extras.

It would take almost a whole second game, in terms of innings, for either team to score a run. Baiairdi and Sullivan had an extra innings pitcher's duel at Hendy field from the eighth to the 15th. Then, in the 15th inning, after Pietrafesa reached base, Estrada doubled and Pietrafesa scored all the way from first to put the Buccaneers up, 8-7. Later in the inning, White singled to score Estrada and Houston singled to score White and the Bucs led 10-7. In the bottom of the inning, Baiardi, in the longest relief outing of his collegiate career, retired the Falcons and earned the win, 10-7, in game one of the day, game two of the series.

How It Happened

It took until the fourth inning but that's when the Bucs put up four runs in game two. Estrada drove in Hefner and Velzis scored on an error. Logiudice singled to right and Estrada scored on another miscue. Leslie drove in the fourth run in the inning on a bases-loaded walk that scored Logiudice and the Bucs led 4-0.

In the fifth, the Bucs offenses exploded for eight runs. Logiudice singled to bring in Pietrafesa for the first run. White walked with the bases loaded for the second. Freeman doubled to left to drive in two runs. White scored later on a wild pitch and Velzis hit a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to bring in three runs and the Bucs led 12-0.

Dean was masterful on the mound throwing 101 pitches and allowed one hit and two walks. Four runners reached base in total as one got on due to an error. Dean finished off the Falcons and the Bucs earned the series sweep, 12-0.

 

What's Next

Maritime host Wentworth on Wednesday in a midweek non-conference game at 5pm at Hendy Field.
