Buccaneers Sweep Raiders in Sunday Matinee

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Bucs baseball hosted Rivier on Sunday to close out their busy, five games in three days slate this weekend. The Buccaneers handled the Raider in both games, winning the first game 9-4 and the second 3-0. AJ Pietrafesa recorded his 100th career hit in the first game and Brenden Baiardi tied the program record for career saves in game two with the 14th of his career.

 

Game One

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • AJ Pietrafesa went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in game one with a single, two doubles and a home run. His third hit of the day was the 100th of his career.
  • Grady FreemanMichael EstradaAlec Marsden, and Evan Vieira all had one hit in the win.
  • Aidan Weir, Pietrafesa and Marsden each drove in two runs. Tucker Leslie, Freeman, and Vieira all drove in one run.
  • Pietrafesa scored three times, Estrada scored twice, and Leslie, Marsden, Vieira, and Weir all came in to score once.
  • To go along with Pietrafesa's two doubles and home run, Estrada and Marsden both recorded doubles.

Rivier

  • Colton Colleran recorded two hits for the guests. Luis Tejada, Luis Colon, Ben O'Connell, and Seth Butler all recorded one hit.
  • Colon drove in two runs in the game. Colleran and Butler drove in one apiece.
  • Four different players scored the runs for the Raiders.
  • Colon had the lone extra base hit, a double, for Rivier.
  • Dylan Aliberti, Tejasa, and Alex Gallicano all stole bases in the game.

How It Happened

The Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, two-run double by Colon. 

Maritime answered in the bottom of the second inning with two runs of their own. The first came on a Vieira single to score Pietrafesa and the second on a Weir sacrifice fly to left that brought in Estrada. The score was tied after two, 2-2.

In the top of the third, the Raiders retook the lead, this time 4-2. Colleran hit an infield single which allowed O'Connell to score from third. Then, Butler singled to left and Gallicano came in to score.

Maritime came back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs and never looked back. Weir reached on a fielder's choice intended to be a squeeze bunt and Marsden scored on a late throw to the plate. Leslie grounded out to short and Vieira came in to score. Freeman helped the Bucs take the lead with a two-out single to right that brought in Weir to make the score 5-4 Bucs after four. 

The Buccaneers went on to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Marsden ground rule double, scoring Estrada and Pietrafesa to give the Bucs a 7-4 advantage. They added two more in the bottom of the sixth on Pietrafesa's home run and led 9-4.

Dean shut the door on the Raider in the top of the seventh to earn the complete game victory for the Bucs in game one.

Maritime

  • AJ Pietrafesa kept his perfect day going in game two with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate. Tucker Leslie and Evan Vieira also had two-hit games for the Bucs.

  • Leslie, Estrada, and Dean each drove in a run. 
  • Leslie, Estrada, and Aidan Weir scored the three Bucs runs.

Rivier

  • Dylan Aliberti, Luis Tejada, and Luis Colon tallied the only three hits for the Raiders in the loss.
  • Tejada had a triple, the only extra base hit. 

 

How It Happened

In the bottom of the first, Maritime scored two runs. the first on an Estrada single that scored Leslie, and the second on a Dean single that scored Estrada. The Bucs led 2-0 after one inning of play.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the fourth when Leslie singled to score Weir and the Bucs took a 3-0 lead.

Dwight was nothing short of dominant in his second start of the season and closed the door on the Raiders with six shutout innings. Baiardi stuck to the plan in the seventh and the Bucs earned the shutout win over Rivier, 3-0.

The Bucs are back on the field in Boston on Tuesday against Suffolk University at 3:30pm.
