Buc Ball Drops Doubleheader to Judges

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted Brandeis University in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Hendy Field and in two close games between the teams, the Judges came out on top, 7-4 and 7-6.

 

Game One

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Back making a start for the first time in a year, Tucker Leslie recorded two hits in the game along with AJ Pietrafesa and Max Hefner
  • Michael Logiudice and Costa Beechin each tallied one hit. 
  • Hefner drove in two runs, both on his first-career home run.
  • Leslie and Pietrafesa were also credited with an RBI.
  • Leslie, Pietrafesa, Hefner, and Beechin each scored one run.
  • Leslie hit two doubles in the game and Pietrafesa recorded a double to go along with Hefner's home run in the extra base hit category. 

Brandeis

  • Brian King and Jake Freed each had multi-hit games for the Judges. 
  • Four other Brandeis hitters recorded a hit in the win.
  • King drove in two runs with four other Judges driving in runs in the game.
  • Dylan Walsh and King each scored twice. Jordan Greenway and Eddie Zanor scored once.
  • King hit a home run in the game and added a double. Walsh and Matt Chafin each had a double in the game. 
  • Henry Aronwald and Zanor each stole two bags in the win. Greenway, Walsh and Freed stole one each. 

How It Happened

Brandeis scored first in the game, getting three in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead early. Maritime answered with one run in the bottom of the inning on a Pietrafesa single that scored Leslie.

In the top of the second, the Judges got a run back. With a runner on second, Greenway struckout and Aronwald stole third. An errant throw by the Bucs allowed him to come in and make it 4-1 Judges. In the bottom of the frame, Leslie hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Beechin to score to cut the deficit to two runs. 

The bucs kept Brandeis off the board in the third and in the bottom of the inning, Hefner homered to left field to score two and tie the game at 4-4. 

The fourth inning was scoreless for both teams and in the top of the fifth, King homered to break the tie and put the visitors up, 5-4. 

Maritime would fail to score a run the rest of the way and Brandeis added two in the top of the seventh inning to seal the 7-4 win over the Bucs in game one.

Maritime

  • Brett Velzis had two hits in the game including his first home run of the season and the 17th of his career which ties the all-time program record for career home runs.
  • Max HefnerAJ PietrafesaMichael EstradaCosta Beechin, and Alec Marsden each recorded a hit in the loss. 
  • Velzis drove in three runs and Hefner, Pietrafesa, and Estrada each plated one.
  • Hefner scored twice, Tucker Leslie, Velzis, Pietrafesa, and Evan Vieira all scored once.
  • Pietrafesa had a triple to go along with Velzis's home run as the only extra base hits for the Bucs.
  • Estrada and Beechin each had a stolen base in the game.

Brandeis

  • Jake Freed had two hits for the guests. Seven other Judges recorded a hit in the win.
  • Matt Chafin drove in two runs, five Brandeis hitters recorded one RBI.
  • Freed and Justin Keeler each scored twice with four other Judges coming in to score once.
  • Brian King had the only extra base hit of the game, a double.
  • Henry Aronwald had the only stolen base for Brandeis in the game.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers sat down the Judges in the top of the first and then took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the inning. Velzis grounded out to second base and that allowed Leslie to score from third. Pietrafesa then flew out to deep center field that brought in Hefner to put the Buccaneers up 2-0 after one inning of play. 

Brandeis scored one in the top of the second on a single that scored Freed and the Bucs led 2-1 after two.

In the bottom of the third, Velzis homered to left center, his first of the season, scoring himself and Hefner to make it 4-1 Bucs.

In the top of the fourth, Chafin answered for the Judges with a two-RBI single to center field to cut the Maritime lead to one run, 4-3. 

The Bucs scored again in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead back to two runs. Maritime led 5-3 after five.

Brandeis grabbed some momentum in the sixth scoring two runs to tie the game at 5-5. 

With the Bucs unable to score a run in the sixth or seventh, the game went to extra innings.

A scoreless eighth led to an exciting ninth inning. The Judges scored two in the top of the ninth, the first run came across on King's double, the second on a Freed single. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, the Bucs got one run back to make it 7-6. With the bases loaded, Maritime grounded out to end the ball game and the Judges earned the win in game two, 7-6, and swept the two-game series.

 

What's Next

The Buccaneers are on the road on Tuesday for their next game at Gordon College. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
