Sailing Records Trio Of Top Seven Finshes In Competition Throughout Region Over Weekend

Navy Shields Trophy/Mattapoisett Round The Bay/Boston Harbor Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md./MARION, Mass./BOSTON, Mass.--  The Massachusetts Maritime sailing team recorded solid performances at the Navy Shields Trophy, the Mattapoisett Round The Bay and Boston Harbor Invitationals over the weekend, including a second place finish in the waters off Marion and a seventh place finish at Navy.

Sophomores Nicholas Pehr (Seabrook, Tex.) and Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.) skippered “Comet” to a second place performance in the Mattapoisett Round The Bay race, and they teamed with sophomore Christopher Wagner (Middleton, Mass.) and freshmen Brandon Deal and Brian Lambiase in the competition.  Additionally, the tandem of senior Nathaniel Olsen, junior Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.), sophomore Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) and freshmen James Lamb, Tor Johannessen, Andrew Holmes and Timothy Forgione sailed to a third place finish at Mattapoisett.

Massachusetts Maritime placed seventh at the prestigious Shields Trophy, with senior Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.), juniors Matthew Butler (Guilford, Conn.), Timothy Dexter (Manchester Center, Vt.), Andrew Gregoire (Charlotte, N.C.) and Travis Thonus (East Dennis, Mass.), sophomores Daniel Barry (Dartmouth, Mass.), Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) and Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman Francis Dougherty competing for the Buccaneers.  Host Navy took top honors in the event, with Merchant Marine and Maine Maritime finishing in the runner-up and third place spots, respectively.

Sophomore Matthew Charpentier (Lunenburg, Mass.) and freshmen Robert Queisser (Carmel, Ind.), Karl Ryder (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Alex Hunt (Baltimore, Md.) guided the Buccaneers to a 15th place finish at the Boston Harbor Invitational, with the duo of Carpenter and Ryder posting a pair of top three finishes in the A Division.

Massachusetts Maritime will host the Commonwealth Invitational next weekend, and the Buccaneers will also compete at the Larry White Trophy and the New Hampshire Loder Trophy.
