The Massachusetts Maritime men’s sailing team enjoyed a busy weekend of competition, as the Buccaneers hosted the Commonwealth Invitational at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center and also took part in the New Bedford Yacht Club’s end of season regatta.
Senior Michael Reney (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.) comprised the “A” boat in the Commonwealth Invitational on the opening day of competition, as sophomore Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) took over for Reney on the second day as the skipper. Freshman Karl Ryder (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior Kyle Mahaffey (Southbury, Conn.) comprised the “B” boat for the Buccaneers in Saturday’s competition, with sophomore Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) taking over for Ryder in Sunday’s races. Both squads posted consistent finishes throughout the weekend, as Massachusetts Maritime placed seventh overall among the 15 team entrants in the event.
Reney, junior Matthew Butler (Guilford, Conn.), sophomore Christopher Wagner (Middleton, Mass.) and freshmen Brian Lambiase, Ryan Davis and Brandon Deal represented the Buccaneers at the New Bedford Regatta in a 10-mile race with oscillating wind conditions throughout.
Massachusetts Maritime will compete at the MIT Smith Trophy, the Ross Trophy, the Navy Intrepid Trophy and the Bowdoin Hewitt Trophy next weekend.
