BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Saturday afternoon, the Buccaneers hosted Springfield College in conference play. Going in to the day the Buccaneers were winless in the NEWMAC at 0-3. At the end of the 60 minutes, the Bucs remained winless with a 17-12 loss to the Pride.

Buccaneer junior attacker Ben Avakian (Bourne, Mass) scored three goals to lead the team. Senior captain Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass) scored twice in the game and had two assists. Franklin Ragge (Scituate, Mass), Alexandre Lucas (Walpole, Mass), and Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass) all scored twice in the game as well. Michael O'Brien (Marshfield, Mass) had one goal for the home team. Freshman Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass) assisted on three Maritime goals. Starting goalie Michael Dolan (McLean, Va) Made just three saves on 16 shots in the first half. Matthew Pierson (Longmeadow, Mass) came in in relief to begin the second half. Pierson faced 12 Pride shots, saved eight and allowed four goals.

For Springfield, Luca Habich (Little silver, N.J.) led all scorers with five goals and added four assists. Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass) added four goals and two assists in the win. Junior Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash) scored twice and had a game high five assists. Faceoff man Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass) won 26 of 32 faceoffs and collected 16 ground balls. Goalie Daniel Biesty (Burnt Hills, N.J.) saved 11 of 23 shots while allowing the 12 Maritime goals. Biesty also scored a goal on an end to end shot in the second half.

The scoring started early and to get 29 goals in in a game, it happened often. Springfield started the scoring a minute and a half in to the contest which was answered by Avakian a minute later. All together, the teams scored 10 goals in the first quarter with the Pride taking a 7-3 advantage after one.

The scoring slowed in the second period as the teams only scored nine combined goals, six to Springfield, three for Maritime. At one point in the second, Springfield went on a 3-0 run, Habich scored twice, Cameron Glover (Brunswick, Maine) netted one goal in the run. Avakian pulled the Bucs back within seven goals with 1:30 left on the clock in the first half. The teams went to the break at 13-6 in favor of Springfield.

Maritime went on the longest scoring streak of the game to begin the second half, scoring three unanswered, four going back to the first half, while allowing Springfield to score just one towards the end of the third. At the end of three, Maritime was back within five goals, 14-9.

The teams went goal-for-goal with each other in the fourth which allowed the Pride to preserve their lead and never let the Bucs back within four goals and ended up winning by five, 17-12, as Habich scored his fifth and final goal with a minute remaining in regulation.

The Bucs are on the road for a non-conference showdown with Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, April 17^th at 7pm.
