Bucs Hammer Vikings on the Road
SALEM, Mass – Maritime took to the road for the first time in 2019 on Tuesday evening to take on Salem State in non-conference play. The 2-2 Bucs went off, scoring 20 goals to take a 20-5 victory and improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Buccaneers were led by current NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week, Ben Avakian (Bourne, Mass) as he led all scorers with four goals and added an assist. Junior Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass) and freshman Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass) each scored three times in the game. Four other Buccaneers had two-goal games, including Senior Captain Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass) and Alexandre Lucas (Walpole, Mass) who each also had two assists. Head Coach Rick Bagby played three Buc goalies in the game. Senior Captain Michael Dolan (McLean, Va) earned the win as he allowed no goals and made five saves.
Salem's five goals were scored by five different players. Tyler Morris scored one of those goals and assisted on two of the other Viking goals. Starting goalie Stephen Balcher dropped to 1-3 on the season. He allowed 14 goals and made 10 saves.
Avakian opened the scoring three minutes in to the game. He also closed the scoring in the first quarter as part of a four-goal unanswered run in the quarter. The Buccaneers continued their run in the second quarter scoring four more to make it an 8-0 run. Jones scored twice in the period.
Salem got on the board 17 second in to the third quarter to end the Maritime run and the shutout. The teams traded goals until half way through the quarter, Salem scoring three times in that run of goals. With eight minutes left in the third, the Bucs opened their lead back to eight goals and ended the quarter on another four goal run to take a 14-3 lead with 15 minutes left to play.
In the fourth, the Bucs matched and beat their eight-goal unanswered run making it 10 since Powers goal at the eight minute mark of the third. Faceoff man Michael Sharry (Braintree, Mass) scored the 20th and final Academy goal with 2:19 left in the game. Salem added two goals in the final minute and a half to make the score, 20-5, which was the final, propelling the Bucs to 3-2 on the season.
Maritime is on the road again on Saturday to take on future LEC opponent Southern Maine at 12pm.
