McCarthy Named To 2016 New England Football Writers Association Division II-III All-Star Team

Massachusetts Maritime senior linebacker Marshall McCarthy continues to earn accolades for his outstanding campaign on the gridiron this past fall, as he is one of 29 student-athletes (including five representing the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference) to be named to the 2016 New England Football Writers Association Division II-III All-Star team that was announced earlier today by selection chair Roger Crosley of the New England Football Conference.

A native of Duxbury, Mass. and a graduate of Duxbury High School, McCarthy is the sixth Buccaneer to earn a spot on the prestigious NEFW squad and the third in the last five seasons to receive all-New England recognition, as he joins Kevin Piecewicz ’94, Paul Diamantopoulos ’96, Tim Zaniboni ’00, Walter Butler ’12 and John Moriarty ’14 in that exclusive club.  McCarthy will receive his honor on Thursday, December 8th at the New England Football Writers Annual Banquet at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham, Mass.

McCarthy was named as the 2016 MASCAC Defensive Player of the Year for his performance for Head Coach Jeremy Cameron’s squad this fall, as he recorded 108 total tackles in just nine games played during the season to rank 12th nationally in NCAA Division III that category.  Marshall led the country in solo stops with 83 overall (9.2 per game), and he became the first player in school history to post back-to-back 100-tackle campaigns.  In just 19 games played in a Massachusetts Maritime uniform, McCarthy registered 155 solo and 53 assisted stops for 208 total tackles, including a career-high 20 back on October 22nd at UMass Dartmouth, and he notched the fewest number of assisted tackles (25) of any player ranked in the top 50 nationally this season.  A two-time all-MASCAC honoree, Marshall averaged nearly 11 tackles per game over the last two years for the Buccaneers, as he reached double-digits in stops 12 times (including seven this season) during that time span.

Joining McCarthy on this year’s New England Football Writers Division II-III All-Star team from the MASCAC are Bridgewater State’s Elvis Romero, Framingham State’s Campbell Marchant, UMass Dartmouth’s Pat Sullivan and Plymouth State’s Zach Ziemba.

Massachusetts Maritime posted four overall victories during the 2016 campaign, as the Buccaneers claimed their second straight Chowder Bowl triumph over rival SUNY-Maritime along with conference wins over Worcester State, Fitchburg State and Westfield State.  Cameron has mentored 47 all-conference players and half of the Academy’s all-time all-New England honorees during his 12-year tenure.
