WORCESTER, Mass. --  Freshman quarterback Mike Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) threw for a career-high 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the final 2:50 of play as Massachusetts Maritime rallied from a late six-point deficit to notch a 21-13 New England Football Conference Bogan Division victory over Worcester State Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

The visiting Buccaneers (3-3, 2-1 NEFC Bogan) used a one-yard plunge by junior Matt White (Westwood, Mass.) with 4:22 remaining in the opening half to take a 7-0 advantage at the break, but the host Lancers (3-3, 1-2 NEFC Bogan) used a pair of field goals by freshman Erich Perfetti (Shrewsbury, Mass.) of 27 and 29 yards, respectively, that sandwiched a 10-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Tony Tokarz (Holden, Mass.) to fellow junior Will Franklin (Brattleboro, Vt.) to score 13 unanswered points and take a 13-7 lead with 7:48 remaining.

Worcester State drove to the Massachusetts Maritime 18-yard line with three-and-a-half minutes to play looking to extend its lead to nine, but junior Walter Butler (Bourne, Mass.) blocked Perfetti’s 30-yard field goal attempt that was returned by freshman Stefan Gustafson (Plymouth, Mass.) to the Lancer 30-yard line.  Stanton then hooked up with White on a 30-yard strike on the second play of the drive to give the Buccaneers the lead for good at 14-13 with 2:50 to play, and after holding on downs at the Lancer 27, Stanton extended the visitors’ lead to eight by connecting with sophomore Jonathan Emond (Green Harbor, Mass.) on his second 30-yard touchdown of the day.

After the ensuing kickoff gave Worcester State the ball on its own 40 with 1:21 remaining, Tokarz led the Lancers down to the Buccaneer 5-yard line in the closing seconds with a two key conversion on third and fourth downs, but his attempted hook-up with Franklin on a potential tying touchdown on 4th-and-2 was broken up by senior Andy Hirko (Uxbridge, Mass.), enabling Massachusetts Maritime to run out the clock.

Stanton completed 17-of-28 pass attempts to go with his two scores in the win for the Buccaneers, who received 135 all-purpose yards from White (76 rushing, 59 receiving) as well as 59 receiving yards on four receptions from Emond.  Tokarz completed 15-of-35 attempts for 175 yards to go with his touchdown in the setback for the Lancers, who received 81 rushing yards from junior Marcus Price (Worcester, Mass.) as well as 67 receiving yards on five catches from junior Cliff Oratokhai (Worcester, Mass.), as the two teams combined for 620 yards of total offense and 150 plays.

Butler paced Massachusetts Maritime defensively with a career-high 14 total tackles, including six solo stops and a sack, to go with his blocked field goal, while junior Charles Sykes (Dartmouth, Mass.) added nine total tackles (five solo) and the Buccaneers’ other blocked field goal attempt (of 33 yards) on the day.  Junior Mike Bois (Lakeville, Mass.) added eight tackles for the winners, who also received seven total stops and a fumble recovery from sophomore Evan Sheridan (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Senior Tyler Russell (Princeton, Mass.) amassed 27 total tackles (10 solo) in the setback for Worcester State, which also received 10 tackles from junior Cameron Jones (Stow, Mass.) as well as nine stops and a sack from sophomore Adam Straughn (Rockland, Mass.).

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Fitchburg State in an NEFC Bogan Division match-up next Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at Noon, while Worcester State travels to Bridgewater, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in an NEFC Bogan Division contest that kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
