Horey Earns Spot On CoSIDA Football Academic All-District Team Presented By ESPN

Massachusetts Maritime senior punter Jarad Horey was named late last week to the 2010 College Sports Information Directors of America Football Academic All-District Team Presented By ESPN for his efforts both on the field and in the classroom.

A native of Ledyard, Conn. and a graduate of Ledyard High School, Horey is now eligible for selection to the 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Presented By ESPN, as national honorees will be announced later this month.

A Marine Engineering major at the Academy, Horey has achieved a 3.52 cumulative grade point average, as he is a three-time New England Football Conference and Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic selection.  Horey averaged 31.6 yards on 30 punts during the 2010 season for Head Coach Jeremy Cameron’s squad, including five inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and a career-long 68-yard boot in a 34-7 victory over Fitchburg State on October 16th.  He connected on 14-of-17 PAT attempts and kicked a 28-yard third quarter field goal in the season-ending 23-7 victory over Bridgewater State in the 32nd Annual Cranberry Bowl Presented By Ocean Spray, the Buccaneers’ first triumph over the Bears in 14 years.

Horey is the second Buccaneer to earn CoSIDA ESPN Academic All-District accolades in the last two seasons, as former Massachusetts Maritime standout William Hafferty ’10 also earned the honor in 2009.

The Buccaneers posted their highest victory total in 10 years under Cameron’s guidance this fall, finishing with a 5-5 overall mark and a 4-3 slate in New England Football Conference Bogan Division play.  In addition to the Cranberry Bowl triumph over Bridgewater State, Massachusetts Maritime also notched its first win over Coast Guard in 11 years with a 23-16 Homecoming victory on September 25th.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America program was established in 1952 by legendary Southern Methodist University Sports Information Director Lester Jordan, and for the past 58 years countless student-athletes in 20-plus NCAA championship sponsored sports have been recognized at all levels of play for their efforts on the field and their work in the classroom.
