CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  Junior Matt White (Westwood, Mass.) amassed 104 all-purpose yards and scored a career-high three touchdowns to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 38-17 non-league college football victory over MIT Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.

The visiting Buccaneers (1-2) used a pair of touchdowns each in the first and second quarters to race out to a 28-10 advantage at the break, as freshman quarterback Mike Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) opened the scoring by connecting with sophomore Jonathan Emond (Green Harbor, Mass.) for his first collegiate scoring pass on a 40-yard strike just 2:37 into the contest.  The host Engineers (1-1) evened matters midway through the opening stanza on junior Marcel Sanchez’s (Oneonta, N.Y.) first of two one-yard touchdown runs on the day, but White’s one-yard plunge with 41 seconds remaining in the first stanza gave Massachusetts Maritime the lead for good at 14-7.

Junior Nathan Sherr (Lynnfield, Mass.) extended the Buccaneer lead to 21-7 just over four minutes into the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run (his fourth career score against MIT), and after a 23-yard field goal by freshman Matthew Peterson (Spring, Tex.) on the ensuing Engineer possession, White’s second one-yard scoring run with just over a minute remaining in the half gave the visitors their 18-point cushion at intermission.  After a scoreless third frame, White hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Stanton just 56 seconds into the final stanza, as that score, coupled with a 32-yard field goal by freshman Brandon Rodrigues (Brockton, Mass.) with 4:16 to play, sandwiched Sanchez’s second one-yard touchdown plunge of the day to close out the scoring.

Sherr rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries to notch his fourth career 100-yard performance in the win for Massachusetts Maritime, as he combined with White and sophomore Barry Reopell (South Dennis, Mass.) to rush for 215 of the Buccaneers’ 243 yards on the ground for the afternoon.  Stanton completed 9-of-12 passes for 185 yards to go with his two touchdowns in his second collegiate start for the visitors, as Emond (three receptions, 75 yards), White and junior Kyle Rowe (Plymouth, Mass.) combined for all but 16 of Massachusetts Maritime’s receiving yards.

Sanchez paced the MIT rushing attack with 70 yards on 19 carries to go with his two touchdowns, as the Engineers were held to 109 yards on the ground after gaining 252 in last week’s season-opening win over Becker.  Senior quarterback Kyle Johnson (Fairview, N.C.) completed 14-of-17 passes for 160 yards in the setback for the hosts, who received 12 catches and 161 receiving yards from senior Mike Fitzgerald (Wilmington, Mass.).

Senior Peter Avitabile (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) recorded seven total tackles (three solo) to lead the way defensively for Massachusetts Maritime, while junior James Hutchinson (Pembroke, Mass.) added six total tackles (four solo) while forcing and recovering a fumble on the day.  Fellow juniors Walter Butler (Bourne, Mass.) and Mike Bois (Lakeville, Mass.) also added six total tackles each for the Buccaneers, who also received interceptions from senior Andy Hirko (Uxbridge, Mass.), junior Charles Sykes (Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Mazurkiewicz (Attleboro, Mass.).  Junior Patrick Jupe (Austin, Tex.) led MIT defensively with 10 total tackles (six solo), while senior Brian Doyle (Hopkinton, Mass.) added nine total stops (eight solo) in the setback for the Engineers.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Coast Guard in both its home and New England Football Conference Bogan Division opener next Saturday afternoon as part of Homecoming festivities at Clean Harbors Stadium that kick at Noon, while MIT opens New England Football Conference Boyd Division action next Saturday afternoon by heading to Milton, Mass. to square off with Curry for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
