THROGGS NECK, N.Y. --  Freshman Thomas Davis’s (Westbury, N.Y.) five-yard touchdown run with 4:21 remaining lifted New York Maritime to a come-from-behind 15-12 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Fourth Annual Chowder Bowl match-up played Thursday evening at Reinhart Field.

Davis’s first career score capped a six-play, 58 yard drive that enabled the host Privateers (1-0) to overcome a five-point deficit and capture their fourth straight triumph in the Chowder Bowl series.  New York Maritime jumped out to a 7-0 advantage with 5:50 remaining in the opening quarter on junior Jamie Spanopoulos’s (Franklin Square, N.Y.) one-yard plunge, but the visiting Buccaneers (0-1) closed that deficit to just one when junior Matt White (Westwood, Mass.) capped an eight-play, 45-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds remaining in the half to slice the Privateer edge to 7-6 after a missed extra point.  The score remained that way until the final stanza when Massachusetts Maritime grabbed a 12-7 lead on junior Nathan Sherr’s (Lynnfield, Mass.) one-yard scoring plunge that capped a 14-play, 70-yard drive with 7:27 remaining, but Davis provided the heroics for the hosts on the ensuing drive for New York Maritime, which held the Buccaneers on downs on the visitors’ final possession of the night and ran out the final 2:41 of action.

Sophomore quarterback Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J.) combined with Spanopoulos to rush for 189 of New York Maritime’s 248 yards on the ground for the evening, as the two squads combined for just 12 completed passes and 83 total yards through the air.  Sherr led all rushers with his third career 100-yard performance in compiling 140 yards on the ground to go with his touchdown for Massachusetts Maritime, which amassed 189 rushing yards and 235 yards of total offense for the contest.  Junior quarterback Cory Antunes (Brockton, Mass.) completed all but four of his 10 passing attempts for 46 yards in his first carer start for the Buccaneers, who held the ball for nearly 32 minutes and converted eight of 15 third down conversion attempts.

Sophomore Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y.) led New York Maritime defensively with a game-high 17 total tackles, including 14 solo stops, while junior Rob Gorgy (Hillsborough, N.J.) added nine total tackles (five solo) for the Privateers.  Junior Mike Bois (Lakeville, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime on the defensive side with a career-high 10 solo tackles, while sophomore Nick Mazurkiewicz (Attleboro, Mass.) collected a career-best eight solo stops for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime returns to action next Saturday, September 11th when the Buccaneers travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on Western New England in a non-league outing that kicks-off at 1:00 p.m., while New York Maritime heads to Danbury, Conn. next Friday, September 10th to clash with Western Connecticut in a non-league match-up that kicks-off at 7:00 p.m.
