SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --  Juniors J.J. Jachym (Milford, Conn.) and Bryce Brown (Guilford, Conn.) combined for 277 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns as Western New England used three fourth quarter scores to pull away with a 30-6 non-league college football victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

Jachym capped a 12-play, 82-yard opening drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge midway through the opening quarter to give the host Golden Bears (1-1) a 7-0 advantage, but the visiting Buccaneers (0-2) pulled to within one just 3:08 into the second stanza when sophomore Barry Reopell (South Dennis, Mass.) capped off a 14-play, 78-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run (the first of his career) to make it a 7-6 contest at the break after the extra point was blocked.  Brown extended Western New England’s lead to 14-6 midway through the third quarter with a two-yard touchdown run, and the Golden Bears iced their triumph by taking advantage of three Massachusetts Maritime interceptions in less than seven minutes to open the final stanza, as a 46-yard touchdown pass from Brown to junior Kyle Fillmore (Danielson, Conn.) was sandwiched by a 24-yard scoring scamper from sophomore Mike Graham (Norwalk, Conn.) and a 29-yard field goal by senior Jake Field (Long Valley, N.J.) that capped the scoring with 6:41 to play in the contest.

Jachym rushed for 177 yards on 28 carries in the triumph for the hosts, while Brown amassed 146 yards of total offense, including 100 yards on 14 carries, as Western New England collected 409 rushing yards on 60 attempts and outgained the Buccaneers by a total of 507-203 on the afternoon.  Reopell rushed for a career-best 88 yards to go with his touchdown in the setback for the visitors, as freshman quarterback Mike Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) completed 9-of-23 passes for 84 yards in his first collegiate appearance.

Sophomore Phil Tsopanides (Fairfield, Conn.) paced the Golden Bears defensively with seven total tackles (five solo), while senior Dylan Chandler (Durham, Maine) picked off a pair of passes for the hosts.  Junior Charles Sykes (Dartmouth, Mass.) registered a career-high 12 total tackles, including 10 solo stops, in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a career-best eight total tackles (seven solo) from sophomore Danny Valdez (Fernandina, Fla.) as well as the first career interception by freshman Stefan Gustafson (Plymouth, Mass.), who amassed 151 all-purpose yards, including 144 on kickoffs for the contest.

The victory was Western New England’s third in the seven-game series between the two schools and first since the 1984 season, as today’s contest marked the first match-up between the Golden Bears and Buccaneers since September 13, 1986.

Massachusetts Maritime wraps-up its season-opening three-game road trip next Saturday afternoon by heading to Cambridge, Mass. to take on MIT in a non-league outing that kicks off at 1:00 p.m., while Western New England hosts Westfield State in a non-league match-up next Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium that also kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
