Maritime Athletics Update Regarding COVID-19

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- On Monday, the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference announced that "Given the increasing number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and restrictions on the size of gatherings and school closures, the MASCAC would not be able to provide a meaningful student-athlete experience." That said, the MASCAC has regretfully announced that all regular and postseason contests for the 2020 spring season have been cancelled. The Academy has decided to adopt this model for all of its programs, including those that do not compete in the MASCAC (men's lacrosse, crew, sailing).

"Athletes understand the importance of teamwork more than most, and by working together we will all keep ourselves, our families and our campus safe." Said Academy physician Jeffery Cukor. "A change in culture to cover coughs, minimize social contacts, staying home especially if ill, very frequent handwashing, and not greeting friends or family with handshakes, hugs, or kisses will help slow down spread and make a difference. Stay in touch with each other, especially older or sicker friends and family that may need some help. We all look forward to getting back to normal, and it will take all of us to get there."

"This is a very difficult and challenging decision to make. The concern for our student-athletes health and well-being is always our number one priority." Said Director of Athletics Mike Kelley. "It is incredibly disappointing that we will not be able to see our student-athletes, especially our seniors, compete this spring. This is a very interesting time for our community, and our country. Buccaneers need to support each other now more than ever."
