MacVarish Sets Pace For Second Straight Week In Leading Men's Cross Country To Sixth Place Finish At University Of New England Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country squads continued their respective solid starts to the new season on Saturday morning, as the Buccaneer men placed sixth of 14 teams and the Buccaneer women finished ninth of 15 entrants competing at the University of New England Invitational that was held at Rotary Park.

 

Freshman James MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime on the men’s side for a second straight week, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 28:47 that was good for 20th place individually.  Juniors Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) and Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) followed in 30th and 37th place, respectively, with times of 29:06 and 29:33, while junior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) closed out the scoring with respective 66th and 68th place finishing times of 31:16 and 31:26.  The Buccaneers posted a team score of 190 points in the event, which was won by Lyndon State with a team score of 32 points.  Host University of New England finished as the runner-up with 62 points, while Salve Regina was third with 95 points.

 

Senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for a second straight week as well for Massachusetts Maritime, as she finished 55th individually over the 5.1K course with a time of 22:57.  Sophomore Dominique Dertien (Panama City, Fla.) and senior Jenelle Piche (Coventry, R.I.) were next in 72nd and 75th place, respectively, with times of 23:41 and 23:45, while freshmen Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.) and Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 109th and 112th place finishing times of 26:04 and 26:14.  Massachusetts Maritime notched a team score of 232 points in the competition that was won by Salve Regina with a score of 33 points, while the University of New England (43 points) and Southern Maine (107 points) followed in the runner-up and third place spots, respectively.

 

Both Buccaneer squads will head to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational that begins at 11:15 a.m.
