MacVarish Leads Pack For Third Straight Week As Men's Cross Country Placed 21st At UMass Dartmouth Invitational

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams posted solid performances at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men placed 21st and the women placed 28th in a field that featured squads from both Divisions II and III.

 

Freshman James MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) paced the Massachusetts Maritime men for a third straight week, as he placed 73rd individually with a time of 28:15.61 over the 8K layout.  Junior Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) was next in 91st place with a time of 28:39.17, while fellow junior Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) placed 136th individually with a time of 29:57.68.  Junior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring in 148th and 156th place, respectively, in a field of 210 runners while posting times of 30:26.72 and 30:48.91.  Franklin Pierce took top honors in the team competition with a score of 52 points, while Keene State (66) and Wilmington (Del.) (77) followed in the runner-up and third place spots.

 

Senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) led the Massachusetts Maritime women for a third straight week, as she placed 164th individually with a time of 23:40 over the 5K course.  Sophomore Dominique Dertien (Panama City, Fla.) and freshman Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) followed in 166th and 182nd place, respectively, with times of 23:46 and 25:50, while senior Lauren Bateman (Newbury, Mass.) and junior Elise LaBonte (Weymouth, Mass.) closed out the Buccaneer scoring with respective times of 26:45.50 and 30:07.42 that were good for 192nd and 203rd place.  Rowan (N.J.) took top team honors with a score of 45 points, while Brandeis (51) and Keene State (113) were the runner-up and third place squads.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads travel to Chicopee, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete in the Elms Blazer Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
