Men's Cross Country Places Three In Top Nine To Finish Second At CCRI Tri-State Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams put together two more solid performances in competition at the Community College of Rhode Island Tri-State Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Buccaneer men tied for second place with Eastern Connecticut while topping MASCAC foes Bridgewater State and Worcester State and the Buccaneer women finished sixth overall in the competition.

 

Three individuals placed in the top nine on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman James MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace for a fifth straight week for the Buccaneers by covering the 8K layout in a time of 28:21.43 to place sixth overall.  Juniors Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) followed in seventh place with a time of 28:28.41, while fellow junior Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) was next in ninth place after posting a time of 28:54.17.  Junior Godfred Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) closed out Massachusetts Maritime’s scoring by placing 30th and 34th, respectively, with times of 31:11.82 and 31:38.65, as the Buccaneers and Warriors both posted team scores of 84 points to finish behind champion Wheaton’s mark of 32 points.

 

On the women’s side, senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) paced Massachusetts Maritime for a fifth straight week as well, as she covered the 5K course in a time of 24:12.24 that was good for 32nd place individually.  Sophomore Dominique Dertien (Panama City, Fla.) and senior Jenelle Piche (Coventry, R.I.) followed in 39th and 42nd place, respectively, with times of 24:52.92 and 25:22.04, while freshmen Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) and Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring in 43rd and 51st place with respective times of 25:23.40 and 26:54.91.  Wheaton also took top team honors in the women’s competition with a score of 25 points, as the Lyons bested runner-up Bridgewater State (50) and third place Eastern Connecticut (62).

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads travel to Westfield, Mass. next Saturday morning to participate in the Westfield State James Earley Invitational that begins at 11:00 a.m.
