MacVarish Leads Men's Cross Country To Seventh Place Finish At Emmanuel Saints Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime cross country teams tuned up for the upcoming Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championships with solid performances at the Seventh Annual Emmanuel Saints Invitational on Friday afternoon at Franklin Park, as the Buccaneer men placed seventh of 16 teams while the Buccaneer women finished 13th overall in the competition.

 

Freshman James MacVarish (Braintree, Mass.) set the pace for a seventh straight week on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:55 to place 17th individually in a field of 169 runners.  Juniors Tyler Brady (Woburn, Mass.) and Brenton Andrews (Hubbardston, Mass.) followed in respective 29th and 40th place with times of 28:45 and 29:18, while senior Steven Migridichian (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Anthony DeTommaso (Weymouth, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with times of 30:39 and 31:23 to record respective 74th and 87th place finishes.  Babson took top honors on the men’s side with a team score of 18 points, while the University of New England (82) and Wheaton (91) finished in the runner-up and third place positions.

 

Senior Liz Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime for a seventh straight week as well in the competition, as she placed 62nd individually in the field of 154 runners with a time of 23:16 over the 5K course.  Senior Jenelle Piche (Coventry, R.I.) and sophomore Dominique Dertien (Panama City, Fla.) followed in 86th and 100th place, respectively, with times of 24:32 and 24:56, while freshmen Kylie Foster (Sandwich, Mass.) and Celeste Menard (Annandale, Va.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective times of 25:02 and 26:12 that were good for 101st and 121st place.  Wheaton claimed top honors in the final women’s team scoring with 25 points, while the University of New England (47) and host Emmanuel (101) finished in the runner-up and third place spots.

 

Both Massachusetts Maritime teams travel to Gorham, Maine on Saturday, November 2nd to compete for their respective MASCAC crowns as part of the 2013 New England Alliance Championships hosted by Southern Maine beginning at 11:00 a.m.
