Nordin Field, Norton, Mass.

FINAL:              WHEATON 9, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 7

NORTON, Mass. --  Sophomore Liam Pearson’s (Asbury, N.J.) goal with 6:44 remaining proved to be the game-winner as Wheaton overcame a two-goal third quarter deficit to notch a 9-7 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

The host Lyons (6-9, 2-5 NEWMAC) jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter advantage before the visiting Buccaneers (4-9, 0-6 NEWMAC) closed back to within one (5-4) at the break on sophomore Ted Powers’ (Marshfield, Mass.) goal with 32 seconds remaining in the opening half, and Massachusetts Maritime used tallies from senior sophomore Zack O’Brien (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshman Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass.) in the opening 5:24 after intermission to take a 7-5 lead.  Man-up markers off the sticks of senior Zach Brode (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore Alex Stomberg (Glastonbury, Conn.) evened matters for Wheaton heading into the final 15 minutes of action and set up Pearson’s go-ahead tally, as Stomberg added an insurance goal with 5:30 remaining to account for the final score.

Senior Will Morrison (Osterville, Mass.) and sophomore CJ Leighton (Falmouth, Maine) each added two goals and an assist in the triumph for the Lyons, who also received a marker from senior Graydon Cook (Garrison, N.Y.).  Sophomore Josh Talanian (Arlington, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of assists for the winners, who received single helpers off the sticks of sophomores James Marcucella (Reading, Mass.) and Matt Morgan (York, Maine) as well as freshman Maxwell McLaughlin (Westmoreland, N.H.).

Powers scored twice in the setback for the Buccaneers, who received a goal and an assist from Avakian.  Junior Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) accounted for the other marker of the match for Massachusetts Maritime, which received assists from senior Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman Franklin Ragge (Scituate, Mass.).

Junior Joey Mitchell (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with nine saves over 50-plus minutes of play for Wheaton, which received a stop in nine minutes of action from senior Alec Uyeki (North Haven, Conn.).  Sophomore Michael Dolan (McLean, Va.) made 13 saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Lyons outshot the Buccaneers by a 51-37 margin overall (22-18 on goal) for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Emerson in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference outing on Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while today’s match marked the season finale for Wheaton.
