FINAL:              SALEM STATE 9, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 8

SALEM, Mass. --  Freshman Max Trifone’s (Saugus, Mass.) goal with 4:20 remaining proved to be the game-winner as Salem State overcame a three-goal fourth quarter deficit to notch a 9-8 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The host Vikings (2-3) trailed 8-5 heading into the final 15 minutes of action and evened matters on a man-up marker by freshman Corey DaSilva (Townsend, Mass.) with 5:11 to play in the contest, after Salem State won its 12th faceoff of the day, Max Trifone netted the deciding tally just 1:03 later to account for the final margin, as the visiting Buccaneers (4-1) had a chance to send the contest into overtime with an extra-man opportunity with 2:26 remaining but couldn’t capitalize.

Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to a 6-3 halftime advantage on the strength of two goals from sophomore Zack O’Brien (Lakeville, Mass.), and after the Vikings closed back to within a pair at 7-5 early in the third stanza, freshman Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass.) extended the Buccaneer lead back to three with a man-up goal that came with 8:30 to play in the quarter.  Tallies by junior Charlie Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Michael Trifone (Saugus, Mass.) in a 2:51 span early in the final frame enabled Salem State to close to within one and set up the hosts’ heroics in the final five-plus minutes.

Bourgeois netted a hat trick in the triumph for the Vikings, who received a pair of goals and two assists from DaSilva to go with a marker and two helpers off the stick of freshman Hunter Spencer (Beverly, Mass.).  Michael Trifone also added two assists on the day for the winners, who received a tally from junior Craig Denehy (Salem, Mass.).  Sophomore Cody Livermore (Ludlow, Mass.) collected a goal and two assists in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker and helper from junior Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) on the day.  Senior Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.), sophomore Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Franklin Ragge (Scituate, Mass.) also scored goals for the Buccaneers, who received assists off the sticks of sophomores Brendan Kelly (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Kenny Parnell (Marshfield, Mass.).

Sophomore Chris Schaub (Brewster, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Salem State with a nine-save effort, while sophomore Michael Dolan (McLean, Va.) also made nine stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime.  The Vikings outshot the Buccaneers by a 30-29 margin overall (18-17 on goal) while holding a 13-9 edge in faceoffs for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday, April 1st when the Buccaneers host Emerson in the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Clean Harbors Stadium that begins at Noon, while Salem State hosts Dean in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field beginning at 7:00 p.m.
