How It Happened

Maritime got on the board first on the first possession of the game. After an Evan Dyer (East Bridgewater, MA) kick return of 30 yards on the opening kickoff, Cann hit Brightman for 33 yards. A pass interference penalty on West Conn moved the Bucs in side the West Conn 20. Maritime went on to gain five yards and stall, going to Lampros from 28 yards to make it 3-0 Bucs. On the ensuing West Conn drive, Williamson picked off Giller at his own 35 yard line. That set up a 40-yard, five-play drive that got the Buc offense to the West Conn 25. On forth and eight Coach Cameron sent out Lampros again and he hit from 42 yards, his career-long at the time, to make it 6-0 Bucs. Two punts on the next two drives set up a long drive for West Conn. The hosts proceeded to go 77 yards on 10 plays, draining more than five minutes off the clock. The finished off the drive with a Driver touchdown run from one yard out. Weidtman hit the extra point to give West Conn their first lead of the game. The teams went to the second with West Conn leading, 7-6.

To Open the second period of play, the Bucs went on a road trip of their own, going 69 yards on a drive that took 12 plays and nearly six minutes, including a 26-yard pass from Andrews to Brightman. The Bucs got to the West Conn one yard line and, unable to get in the end zone, called on Lampros once again, this time from 18 yards. He converted, giving the Buccaneers the lead back, 9-7. On the very first play of the next drive the Buccaneers picked off Giller again, this time it was Rogers who returned the back 28 yard to the West Conn 10 yard line. With a short field behind them, the West Conn defense held strong keeping the Bucs out of the endzone. On fourth and goal from the four, Lampros came on to make it four for four from 21 yards to give the Bucs a 12-7 lead, a lead they would protect until the halftime break.

West Conn received the opening kickoff of the second half and took the ball 71 yards on nine plays, scoring on a Giller to Ferguson four-yard touchdown pass. Weidtman would miss the extra point but West Conn had retaken the lead, 13-12. West conn forced a punt on the next Buccaneer drive and the Bucs did the same to their hosts on their next possession. After a Ciullo 46-yard punt the Bucs took the ball from their own 29 yard line and marched down the field. In eight plays they consumed 71 yards. On second and six from the West Conn seven, Andrews scored his second rushing tochdown of the season to make it 19-13 after Lampros converted the PAT. That same score would hold as the teams headed to the fourth quarter of play.

To Open the fourth, West Conn put together yet another double-digit play drive. This time they went 51 yards and finished it off with a Driver rushing score, his second of the game. Thie time, Weidtman converted the point after to give his team a 20-19 advantage with 11 minutes still to play. West Conn forced the Buccaneers to punt on their next drive from their own territory. Ciullo punted the ball back to Maritime and they took over on their own 24 yard line. Mitchell took over the drive for the Buccaneers, racking up 45 yards on the ground on three plays including runs of 27 and 14 yards. Maritime tried to go back to the air on second and third down. A pair of incomplete passes led them to fourth down from the 29. The Maritime coaching staff once again sent out Lampros to attempt the longest field goal of his career from 46 yards. the snap and hold were perfect and so was the kick which game the Bucs a 22-20 lead with 2:44 to play. Down two, West conn for the ball back on their own 21. They pushed the ball up the field, including a 34-yard pass and catch from Giller to Penn-Consentino.
