How It Happened

Worcester received the opening kick off after winning the coin toss and went 27 yards on six plays with the drive ending in a punt. Maritime's offense proceeded to go 26 yards in nine plays, the drive also ending in a punt; a 55 yarder by Lampros. On Worcester's second drive of the game they drained the clock and got on the board, going 80 yards in 13 plays taking up nearly seven minutes of the quarter. Williams connected with Sarpong from 16 yards for the touchdown and Wall converted the PAT to give Worcester a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Maritime was unable to do anything with the ball on their first possession of the second quarter and neither was Worcester. The Lancers drive ended on a 10-yard punt by Wall giving the Bucs great field position. The Buccaneers went 51 yards down field in nine plays and the drive stalled at the Worcester nine yard line. Lampros came on for a 26-yard field goal, which he knocked through, to make the score 7-3 Worcester with just over nine minutes left in the half. Worcester went three-and-out on the ensuing drive giving the bal lback to the Bucs. In a flash, Mitchell and Reynolds took over the drive. Mitchell ran for 33 yards in three plays including a 32-yard scamper to the Worcester eight. Reynolds took the ball in to the end zone untouched on the next play, and after Lampros's extra point, the Bucs had taken a 10-7 lead. On the next Lancers drive things were going well for the visitors, moving the ball up field 22 yards and in to Maritime territory. On a second and 10 play from the Bucs 49 Williams completed a pass to Keither Smith Jr. five yards in to the catch and run Ford took the ball right out of Smith's hands and went 56 yards to the house for the touchdown making the score 17-7 after a Lampros PAT. That 17-7 advantage for the Bucs took us in to the halftime break.

On the first drive of the second half the Bucs drove 60 yards in six plays and scored again, this time on a Mitchell 17-yard touchdown which included a truck, a spin move and open space for the sophomore running back. A Lampros extra point ran the Buccaneer lead out to 17 points, 24-7. Worcester had two drives in the third in which they gained 47 and 72 yards respectively but could not score and even turned the ball over on downs on the 72-yard drive. The game went to the fourth with Maritime still leading by 17.

In the fourth, Worcester put their foot on the gas offensively and scored on their first drive of the final 15 minutes of play. Williams hit Davis for his first of three fourth quarter touchdowns on a 36-yard hookup over the middle. Wall's PAT made the score 24-14. Worcester's defense stopped the Bucs outside of field goal range on the next drive forcing a Cann punt. With the ball at their own 13 yard line, the Lancers Drove down the field in seven plays, 87 yards in a minute and 53 seconds. They capped it off with Davis's second touchdown in as many drives on a 34-yard completion. The Bucs next drive ended in a three-and-out and a punt. Worcester got the ball back again, now down three, 24-21, with nearly six minutes to play. Worcester drove down field, 64 yards in nine plays, and Williams hot Davis again for a touchdown, this one from five yards out, to take the lead, their second of the game and first since the opening quarter.
