Stanton Named As New England Football Conference Offensive Player Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime junior quarterback Mike Stanton has been named as the New England Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his record-setting performance in the Buccaneers’ come-from-behind 42-38 victory over rival Coast Guard Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

A native of Quincy, Mass. and a graduate of North Quincy High School, Stanton completed 26-of-36 pass attempts and shattered the school single-game record for passing yards with 420 on the day.  With his team trailing 28-9 early in the third quarter, Stanton tossed touchdown passes of 18, 9 and 60 yards in a 6:30 span that erased Massachusetts Maritime’s 19-point deficit and staked the Buccaneers to a 32-28 advantage late in the stanza.  Stanton directed an attack that also shattered the school single-game record for total offense with 695 yards, and during his third quarter touchdown run he added a pair of key two-point conversion passes that fueled the comeback.

Through three games this season, Stanton has completed 71.1 percent of his passes (54-76) for 803 yards and five touchdowns, as he is averaging nearly 268 yards per game through the air.  He leads the NEFC in passing efficiency (176.3) and ranks 12th nationally in NCAA Division III play in that category, and he is directing a Buccaneer offense that also leads the conference and ranks among the national leaders at 491.3 yards per game.

Massachusetts Maritime, which defeated the rival Bears for the second time in three meetings, improved to 2-1 with Saturday’s conference opening triumph, and the Buccaneers hit the road on Saturday, September 29th to take on defending NEFC Bogan Division champion Framingham State at Maple Street Field in Framingham, Mass., as that contest is set for a Noon EDT kickoff.
