Stanton Earns Second New England Football Conference Offensive Player Of The Week Honor Of Season

Massachusetts Maritime junior quarterback Mike Stanton earned his second New England Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season on Saturday evening for his performance in the Buccaneers’ 56-32 Homecoming victory over Fitchburg State at Clean Harbors Stadium.

A native of Quincy, Mass. and a graduate of North Quincy High School, Stanton amassed 359 yards of total offense on the day, as he completed 27-of-42 pass attempts for 317 yards and three touchdowns of 23, 41 and 34 yards.  He added 42 rushing yards, including a 27-yard first quarter scoring run, as he accounted for four total touchdowns in three quarters of action.

Stanton broke the school single-season passing yards mark on his first completion on Saturday, as he entered the game tied with Jim O’Neill, who held the record of 1,506 yards set in 1982.  Stanton now has 1,823 passing yards in just six games and has completed 62.2 percent of his attempts (140-225) with 13 touchdowns.  In last week’s NCAA Division III national rankings, Stanton was rated 22nd in passing efficiency and is directing the country’s ninth-best offense at 537.2 yards per game.

Stanton’s previous NEFC accolade came on September 22nd after he threw for a school-record 420 yards and three touchdowns in leading Massachusetts Maritime back from a 19-point third quarter deficit to a 42-38 victory over rival Coast Guard.  He became the fifth Buccaneer to earn the prestigious Division II/III Gold Helmet Award from the New England Football Writers and Gridiron Club of Greater Boston while also being tabbed as the ECAC Division III Northeast Offensive Player of the Week after his performance against the Bears.

Massachusetts Maritime, which now stands at an even 3-3 overall and 2-2 in NEFC Bogan Division play after Saturday’s victory, looks for its second straight win in the Admiral’s Cup series with Maine Maritime next Saturday, October 20th when the Buccaneers head to Castine, Maine for the 40th renewal of the rivalry beginning at Noon EDT.
