Llewellyn and Naar Net Five Goals Each in Bucs win over Regis

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Bucs women's lacrosse took on Regis College on Wednesday in the team's season and home opener. With five goals each from Senior captain Cassie Llewellyn and freshman Sarah Naar the Bucs earned a 16-6 victory. The win is the first for first year head coach Mikayla Correia.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Llewellyn and Naar both scored a game-high five times in the victory.
  • Junior captain Lindsy Durgin scored four times.
  • Allie Dickinson netted two goals in the game.
  • Llewellyn and Dickinson each had a game-high two assists in the game. Freshman Katie Smiley and sophomore Brady Deschamps had one helper each.
  • On the draw, Llewellyn led the team with four draw controls.
  • Defensively, Llewellyn also led the team and the game with four caused turnovers.
  • In total, the Bucs picked up 35 ground balls, were 16-of-27 on clearances, won eight draw controls, scored on three of seven free position shots and took 28 total shots in the win.

Regis

  • Hope Alto scored a team-high four goals for the Pride in the loss.
  • Molly Higgins and Madeline Conover each scored once.
  • Higgins, Alto, Kylee Marley, and Izzy Cochrane all had one assist.
  • On the draw, Alto led all players with 12 draw controls.
  • Defensively, Higgins caused three turnovers to lead the team.
  • In total, the Pride picked up 26 ground balls, went 12-of-19 on clearances, won 17 draw controls, were one of two on free position shots, and took 20 shots in total.

How It Happened

Regis opened the scoring 90 seconds into the first quarter when Conover scored on a pass from Alto. From there, the quarter belonged to the Buccaneers as they rattled off four unanswered goals with two from Llewellyn and two from Naar. The Bucs led in rainy Buzzards Bay, 4-1, at the end of the first quarter. 

To begin the second quarter, Regis scored their second to cut the Maritime lead to two goals, 4-2, 30 seconds into the period. Three minutes later, Durgin scored to extend the lead back to three. 40 seconds later, Higgins scored for the Pride to make the score 5-3. Maritime proceeded to go on another run, this time seven unanswered, to close out the half. Durgin, Llewellyn, Naar, and Dickinson all scored to give the Bucs a nine-goal, 12-3, lead at the break.

In the third quarter, the Buccaneers opened the scoring with Durgin's third of the day. Close to seven minutes went by before the next goal was scored which came from the Pride, and the stick of Alto. The Bucs led 13-4 midway through the third. Dickinson and Durgin each scored powerplay goals at 4:45 and 2:07 respectively. The Bucs had a commanding 15-4 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The fourth was the only quarter in which Regis outscored the Buccaneers. Naar opened the scoring with a powerplay goal at 14:21 and that would end the scoring for the night for Maritime. Alto scored two more times at 12:46 and 2:58. The Bucs ran down the clock and left the field with a 16-6 victory over Regis, their first in the all-time series.
