Sailing Finishes top 10 at Shields; Competes in Barnett Trophy

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Over the weekend the Buccaneers sailing team competed in the Shields Trophy at the Naval Academy and in the Barnett Trophy at Bowdoin College in Maine. The Bucs picked up a top 10 finish in the Shield and were 12th place finishers in the Barnett.

In the Shields Trophy, the Buccaneers finished ninth with 57 points, five points shy of NC State and SUNY Maritime in fromt of them with 52 points. They finished 10 points ahead of Army. Maritime's best finish in the seven races run was two seventh place finishes. They added three eight place spots, a ninth, and a 10th for their combined 57 points on the weekend. College of Charleston won the trophy with 17 total points. Merchant Marine and Maine Maritime rounded out the top three with 20 and 29 points respectively.

At the Barnett Trophy in Maine, Maritime finished in 12th place and just one point behind Bates for 11th in the final standings. The Bucs edged out Williams and Middlebury who ended the weekend with 156 and 192 points respectively. The Bucs struggled at the beggining of the weekend but as the events progressed the Bucs climbed picking up a seventh place finished followed by an eighth place finish which is what helped propel them out of the bottom spot in the standings. Boston University nearly swept the events and finished with 33 points taking home first place. Hosts Bowdoin came in second with 38 points and Vermont came in third with 58 points.

The Buccaneers dinghy team is at the University of Vermont and the University of Rhode Island next weekend while the off-shore team will compete in the Hurricane Cup in Marion.
