Bucs Drop to Seahawks in Non-Conference Play

NEWPORT, R.I. – Thursday afternoon, the Buccaneers men's soccer team travelled to take on Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Salve Regina in non-conference action. Though the Maritime defense settle in after two goals by the Seahawks, they were never able to catch up, dropping the game 5-2.

The Buccaneers received goals in the game from Adam Wayrynen (Rockport, Mass) and Benjamin Cook (Fort Myers, Fla). Cook also had an assist on the Wayrynen score. Senior midfielder Brendan Gawron (Braintree, Mass) tallied an assist on the Cook goal and had a shot on goal himself. Maritime rattled off 15 shots in the game, eight of which were on target. In goal, Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass) save five of the 10 shots he saw from Salve.

The Seahawks got a two-goal performance from Owen Stevenson who scored twice on four shots on target. Four other Seahawks scored in the game, including Jacob Guerra who connected on two of his shots on goal. Goalie Michael Payan allowed the two Buccaneer goals and made six saves in the contest.

Both defenses held their own for nearly 20 minutes before the Seahawks broke the scoreless tie in the 19th minute and added a second goal in the 20th minute. 11 minutes later, the 'Hawks added a third goal to their tally. The Bucs didn't let the three goal lead last long, grabbing their first goal on the half in the 40th minute of the foot of Wayrynen. The teams went in to the half with Salve leading, 3-1.

Four minutes in to the second 45, the Seahawks grabbed a fourth goal to take a 4-1 lead. Nine minutes after, the Bucs answered with Cook's goal in the 58th minute. Salve Regina added a fifth and final goal in the 64th minute. The Buccaneers played an offensive game for the final 26 minutes but wouldn't be able to find the back of the net again, losing the game 5-2.

With the loss, the Buccaneers fall to 1-6-1 on the season. Maritime is back on the field Friday night at Clean Harbors Stadium hosting MCLA at 7pm.
