McCarthy Named As MASCAC Football Defensive Player Of The Week

Massachusetts Maritime junior linebacker Marshall McCarthy was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday evening for his efforts in the Buccaneers’ 48-27 victory over Plymouth State yesterday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

McCarthy, a native of Duxbury, Mass. and a graduate of Duxbury High School, amassed a career-high 14 total tackles that included 12 solo stops, 4 ½ tackles for losses totaling 15 yards and a pair of sacks for nine yards.  Additionally, Marshall recorded his first career interception (with a 10-yard return) and added a pair of quarterback hurries on the day.

McCarthy leads Massachusetts Maritime with 89 total tackles that includes 63 solo stops and 13 for losses of 39 yards.  He has also recorded four sacks and four quarterback hurries while defending five passes, and he ranks sixth nationally in NCAA Division III play in solo tackles heading into the final weekend of the season.

McCarthy becomes the second Buccaneer to win MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season, as sophomore defensive back Liam Corkery (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) copped the honor back on September 27th following a 35-31 win at Worcester State.  Head Coach Jeremy Cameron’s squad closes out its 2015 slate next Saturday afternoon when Massachusetts Maritime renews its longstanding rivalry with Bridgewater State in the 37th Annual Cranberry Bowl Presented By Ocean Spray at Clean Harbors Stadium that kicks off at Noon EST.
