Massachusetts Maritime junior wide receiver Jonathan Furtado’s blocked punt that sparked last Saturday’s come-from-behind 35-34 victory over UMass Dartmouth is one of four nominees for this week’s Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Fan Play of the Week.

Fans can visit www.mascac.com and click on the Football Fan Play of the Week page to vote for Jonathan's effort, which came early in the fourth quarter with the Buccaneers trailing 34-21.  After Furtado blocked the Corsair punt attempt, senior teammate Brendan Smith recovered the ball and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown that pulled the hosts back to within six, and Massachusetts Maritime scored on its next possession to complete the comeback.

Voting is open until Noon on Wednesday, and this week’s winner will be announced by the conference office later that afternoon.  Bridgewater State, UMass Dartmouth and Westfield State are the other three schools competing for this week’s top play.

Furtado, who was named on Sunday evening as the MASCAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts, also hauled in a game-high six receptions for 57 yards, including a key 19-yard catch on a 3rd-and-17 conversion on the game-winning touchdown drive, and he recorded his first career interception after coming in as a defensive back in the second half of action.  Jonathan added a 17-yard kickoff return to finish with 76 all-purpose yards for the winners while making a pair of solo tackles.

On the season, Furtado ranks as the second leading receiver for Head Coach Jeremy Cameron’s Buccaneers with 31 receptions for 312 yards and four touchdowns.  He is also averaging 21.4 yards on 14 kickoff returns (with a long of 72 yards).
