Furtado Named As MASCAC Special Teams Player Of The Week Following All-Around Performance Saturday

Massachusetts Maritime junior wide receiver Jonathan Furtado was named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Sunday evening for his efforts in the Buccaneers’ come-from-behind 35-34 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Furtado, a native of Swansea, Mass. and a graduate of Case High School, blocked a punt early in the fourth quarter that was returned by senior teammate Brendan Smith (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) for a 44-yard touchdown to spark the hosts’ comeback from a 13-point deficit.  Furtado also hauled in a game-high six receptions for 57 yards, including a key 19-yard catch on a 3rd-and-17 conversion on the game-winning touchdown drive, and he recorded his first career interception after coming in as a defensive back in the second half of action.  Jonathan added a 17-yard kickoff return to finish with 76 all-purpose yards for the winners while making a pair of solo tackles.

On the season, Furtado ranks as the second leading receiver for Head Coach Jeremy Cameron’s Buccaneers with 31 receptions for 312 yards and four touchdowns.  He is also averaging 21.4 yards on 14 kickoff returns (with a long of 72 yards).

Massachusetts Maritime, which improved to 3-4 overall on the season with Saturday’s triumph, travels to Framingham, Mass. on Halloween afternoon to square off with Framingham State in a MASCAC clash that kicks off at Noon EDT.
