BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Senior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Tyler Smith (Bellingham, Mass.) combined on a three-hit shutout to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 nightcap victory and a split of a non-league college baseball doubleheader with Rivier Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field, as the Raiders posted a 3-2 triumph in the opening contest.

Junior Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.) plated the only run the host Buccaneers (2-3) would need in their nightcap win, as his two-out double in the bottom of the first scored sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.) for the lone tally.  Genereux allowed all three of the visiting Raiders’ (1-9) hits over the first five frames, as he fanned a pair to pick up his first victory of the season, while Smith escaped a two-out, bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to earn his first career save.  Freshman Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) joined Maher and Rosano with hits in the second game triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, while senior Aramis Velez (Lowell, Mass.) collected two of Rivier’s three hits in the nightcap setback.  Freshman Jon Chotkowski (Tewksbury, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Raiders, as he allowed an unearned run and struck out two over the first four innings of play.

After escaping a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the bottom of the first of the opening contest, Rivier plated all three of its runs in the third inning, as an RBI single by sophomore Mike Scanlon (Plantsville, Conn.) gave the Raiders the only tally they would need.  Velez followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 edge, and an RBI triple by senior Kyle Bowser (Newington, N.H.) gave the visitors a key insurance run that proved to be the difference in the game, as the Buccaneers plated single runs in the fifth on Walsh’s RBI single and in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Genereux.  Massachusetts Maritime had its second bases-loaded, no-out situation in the fourth and was unable to score, and the hosts had the tying run thrown out at home in the bottom of the sixth before being retired in order in the seventh to end the game.

Velez, Scanlon, and freshmen Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, N.H.) and Taylor Black (Springfield, Mass.) each collected two hits as part of a 10-hit opening game attack for Rivier in support of junior Gabe May (Portsmouth, R.I.), who worked out of the first and fourth inning jams to earn the victory on the mound with 5 2/3 innings of work that featured three strikeouts.  Sophomore Steven Carlberg (Dover, N.H.) escaped another bases loaded situation in the sixth and recorded the final five outs to record the save for the Raiders, while Genereux rapped out a pair of hits in the lid-lifter for Massachusetts Maritime.  Junior Keith Sanchez (Monroe Township, N.J.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Buccaneers, allowing all three runs and fanning one over 2 2/3 innings of work.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Johnson & Wales in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Rivier heads to Wenham, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Gordon in a non-league contest that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
