Softball: Pope goes 4-for-4 as DiDomenico picks up first Collegiate Win for Bucs

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. -- In game two of seven for the Bucs down south, Head Coach Will Griffiths and his squad picked up the first win of 2022, 7-4, over NVU-Johnson. The victory was the first for freshman pitcher Sicily DiDomenico in the circle and the first for Griffiths as a collegiate head coach.

Maritime

  • Junior Captain Abby Pope went 4-for-4 in the game from the leadoff spot. She scored three runs and stole two bases. Pope also recorded the lone extra base hit of the game in the form of a triple.
  • Senior Captain Camryn Roberts-Capak added two hits, two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases in the win.
  • Five other hitters recorded hits in the game, including Carleen Harring who went 5-6 on the day. She also drove in a run in the game.John
  • Senior Captain Malarie Pittsley drove in a run and recorded a walk.

NVU-Johnson

  • Johnson recorded six hits in the game, two of which came from the starting pitcher, Rapoza.
  • Four other hitters recorded hits. Evelyn Brubaker and Sabrina Colon each drove in a run for the Badgers.

How It Happened

The Buccaneer bats came out hot in game two of the day. Under the warm sun of South Carolina, the Bucs scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Pope scored on a Roberts-Capak single who then scored on a Pittsley single. DiDomenico came across for the team's third run on a passed ball. 

Down three, the Badgers cut the deficit two two on a single to right that brought a run around from second to make the score 3-1. Maritime answered quickly in the bottom of the fram with two more. Pope scored her second of three runs on another Roberts-Capak single then Roberts-Capak scored her second run on a double steal. Pittsley took off for second and on the throw Cam came in to score. Pittsley was put out on the play following CPC crossing the plate.The Bucs took a 5-1 advantage into the third. 

Johnson scraped together two runs in the third on an error and an infield single. The Badgers were able to keep the Bucs off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to keep the score 5-3 heading to the fourth. 

Maritime blanker the Badgers in the top of the frame and scored two more of their own in the bottom of the 4th. Pope scored again, this time of a throwing error. DiDomenico scored later in the inning on a Harring Single. 

The 6th inning and top of the 7th were quite for both teams as the teams went to the final frame with the score 7-3.

In the top of the 7th, Johnson scored on a Brubaker sacrifice fly to center field. With the bases now empty with two outs, the Bucs recorded the final out of the game to take the game, their first win of the season and the first for Coach Griffiths as a collegiate head coach, 7-4.

What's Next
