Softball Loses Hard Fought Doubleheader to Falcons

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers played two games against Fitchburg State at home, as the away team, in their penultimate games of the 2021 season. Game one was close finishing 2-0. Game two was close but with more scoring finishing 11-7 to the Falcons.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Emma Ruginski (Plymouth, Mass) picked up her first career multi-hit game going 2-for-2.
  • Camryn Roberts-Capak (Barnstable, Mass) and Pittsley each had a hit in the game as well.
  • Abby Pope (Falmouth, Mass) stole a base for the Bucs in the loss.

 

Fitchburg

  • Julianna Savone batted 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI. One of her hits was a triple, the lone extra base hit in the game.
  • Five other players recorded hits in the game for the Falcons.
  • Molly Grass and Savone drove in the two runs in the victory.
  • Dana Ciskowski and Lauren Kirkconnell each scored a run.

 

How It Happened

  • With 11 hits in the game and just two runs scored there wasn't too much offensive action in game one.
  • Fitchburg scored in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
  • They would wait until the fifth before adding their second and final run.
  • The Buccaneers threatened in the sixth and again in the seventh and were unable to cut the lead, falling 2-0.

At The Plate

Maritime

  • Senior captain Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn) went 3-for-4 in game two with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • Six other Bucs, Roberts-Capak, Pope, Pittsley, Maia Ostromecki (Barre, Mass), Olivia Camelo (Carver, Mass) and Savanna Leite (New Bedford, Mass) recorded a hit in the game
  • Camelo and Pope each recorded extra base hits, a triple and double respectively.
  • Senior captain Lucia Buzzell (Quincy, Mass) and Pittsley each worked a walk in the loss.
  • Along with the two from Coughlin, Buzzell, Roberts-Capak and Ostromecki stole a base for Maritime.
  • Buzzell, Camelo, Leite, Ostromecki, and Roberts-Capak also all scored a run.

 

Fitchburg

  • Lundyn Forcier led the way offensively for the Falcons with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with four runs scored.
  • Lauren Kirkconnell put together a three hit day with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Three other players had multi-hit games in the win.
  • Forcier and Grass each had extra base hits, a double and home run respectively.
  • Keeley Zompetti and Forcier each stole a base in the victory.

 

How It Happened

  • With a little more action than in game one, runs were score in each of the six full innings played.
  • Maritime struck first with three runs in the top of the first, scoring one on a wild pitch, the third run on an error.
  • It took until the bottom of the second before the Falcons scored three runs to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Pittsley hit an RBI single in the third, scoring Coughlin to retake the lead, 4-3.
  • The Buccaneer lead didn't last long. Fitchburg scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at 4-4.
  • The Bucs retook the lead scoring two runs. The first by way of Camelo's triple which plated Buzzell. The second on a wild pitch, scoring Camelo from third.
  • Down 6-4, Grass homered for the Falcons to cut the deficit to one run.
  • The Falcons held off the Bucs in the top of the fifth and went on to score four runs in the bottom of the frame to ties the game and subsequently take their biggest lead of the game thus far, 8-6.
  • In the sixth, Buzzell sacrificed herself to move Leite from second to third. A Throwing error by Fitchburg allowed Leite to come around to score, pulling the Bucs within one-run, 8-7.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons put the game away scoring three more runs, opening their lead to four, 11-7.
  • The Buccaneer were unable to recover from that deficit after a strong start, dropping game two, 11-7.

 

What's Next?

The Buccaneers will host Worcester State on Saturday, April 24th at Alison Rollins Field in their final two games of the 2021 season. It will also be senior day for the three Buccaneer seniors on the roster. Game time for game one is 12pm. The senior day ceremony will take place at approximately 11:45am.
