Softball Drops Both Games of Season Opening Double Header

FRAMINGHAM, Mass – Second year head coach Will Griffiths and the Buccaneer softball team traveled to Framingham on Saturday to take on a very good Framingham State Rams team. They dropped game one, 10-1, and game two, 15-0, both in five innings due to run rule.

At The Plate

Mass Maritime

  • Junior captain Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass), Sophomore Abby Pope (Falmouth, Mass), and freshman Emma Ruginski (Plymouth, Mass) each recorded a hit in the game for the Bucs. Pope scored the lone run for Maritime.
  • Five players, senior captain Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn), Camryn Roberts-Capak (Barnstable, Mass), Maia Ostromecki (Barre, Mass), Pope, and Ruginski each got on base by way of a free pass.
  • Roberts-Capak and Pope each stole a base as well.

 

Framingham

  • The Rams had 12 hits in the game, recorded by 12 different players.
  • Standing out was Kelsey McGuill who drove in three runs while her replacement Caitlin McCarthy drove in two runs and scored once. Five other players drove in runs for the Rams.
  • Pitcher Ally Moran helped out offensively with a hit, walk and two runs scored.
  • Morgan Poli and McGuill each had a double in the game.
  • Caitlin McCarthy and Abigail Clark both hit a homerun.
  • Kirsten Dick stole a base for the hosts.

 

How It Happened

Maritime was blanked in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the frame, Framingham came out swinging, scoring 6 runs. It started with a Dick single that drove in a run, followed by a McGuill double to bring in three. Up 4-0 The Bucs committed an error which brought McGuill in to score. Another single later in the inning scored Moran to bring the score to 6-0 Rams after one inning of play.

After a scoreless second the Buccaneers scored in the top of the third on a wild pitch followed by a Framingham throwing error that brought Pope across to break up the shutout.

Framingham got the run back in the bottom of the third on a single that brought Moran in to score her third. The Rams added three more runs in the fourth on the McCarthy and Clark homeruns to run the score to 10-1.

Game one ended after five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule. With the loss, the Bucs fall to 0-1 on the season while the Rams improve to 12-1.

At The Plate

Mass Maritime

  • Abby Pope recorded the only hit in the game for the Bucs in game two. She also stole a base, her second of the day.
  • Emma Ruginski recorded a walk to get on base as well.

 

Framingham

  • The Rams strung together 16 hits in game two from 14 different players. Morgan Poli, Caitlin McCarthy each had two.
  • April Swain and Annelyse Rivera both hit doubles for the Rams in this one.
  • Caitlin McCarthy recorded her second home run of the day and Kelsey McGuill hit one as well.
  • The hosts had 15 RBI in the second game from 11 different players. McGuill drove in three, Rivera and McCarthy two apiece.

 

How It Happened

Framingham once again wasted no time getting on the board scoring five in the first inning, three off of McGuill's home run. They added one in the second extended their lead to 6-0.

In the third inning, Framingham put game two away scoring nine runs, two off of a Rivera double and two off of McCarthy's home run.

After five innings the game ended 15-0 in favor of the Rams. With the loss the Bucs drop to 0-2 while the Rams improve to 13-1.

 

What's Next?

The Buccaneers will be at home for their next two games of 2021 on Saturday, April 10th when Westfield State comes to Buzzards Bay for a pair of games beginning at 12pm. It will be the first time they will play on Alison Rollins Field was given a facelift in 2019.
